Summary

Experience Star Wars: A New Hope from a whole new point of view.

On May 25, 1977, the world was introduced to Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, C-3PO, R2-D2, Chewbacca, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth Vader, and a galaxy full of possibilities. In honor of the 40th anniversary, more than 40 contributors lend their vision to this retelling of Star Wars. Each of the 40 short stories reimagines a moment from the original film, but through the eyes of a supporting character. From a Certain Point of View features contributions by best-selling authors, trendsetting artists, and treasured voices from the literary history of Star Wars:

  • Gary Whitta bridges the gap from Rogue One to A New Hope through the eyes of Captain Antilles.
  • Aunt Beru finds her voice in an intimate character study by Meg Cabot.
  • Nnedi Okorofor brings dignity and depth to a most unlikely character: the monster in the trash compactor.
  • Pablo Hidalgo provides a chilling glimpse inside the mind of Grand Moff Tarkin.
  • Pierce Brown chronicles Biggs Darklighter's final flight during the Rebellion's harrowing attack on the Death Star.
  • Wil Wheaton spins a poignant tale of the rebels left behind on Yavin.

Plus 34 more hilarious, heartbreaking, and astonishing tales from Ben Acker, Renée Ahdieh, Tom Angleberger, Ben Blacker, Jeffrey Brown, Rae Carson, Adam Christopher, Zoraida Córdova, Delilah S. Dawson, Kelly Sue DeConnick, Paul Dini, Ian Doescher, Ashley Eckstein, Matt Fraction, Alexander Freed, Jason Fry, Kieron Gillen, Christie Golden, Claudia Gray, E. K. Johnston, Paul S. Force is strong with this book.

Best Star Wars book I've listened to since Disney acquired Star Wars. Loved the way the short stories followed the time line of the film. You could easily imagine these stories going on just off screen. Only two of the stories didn't hold my attention. Highly recommended Star Wars book.

Some real gems

Some really enjoyable, funny and even touching back-stories, but a few were disappointing/too long. Definitely worth it for Star Wars fans.

Star Wars inbetween tales.

If you know the film, it’s really easy to follow the characters point of view you’re listening to. Works really well.

A great selection of mini stories from A New Hope

This is a wonderful set of tales from other characters set in the Star Wars scenes we all know and love. A great listen and a fantastic way of getting more detail from 'A New Hope'

If I could make one recommendation... save your ears and skip the chapter named 'The Kloo Horn Cantina Caper'. It's genuinely quite painful to listen to and not easy to follow.

Absolute gem for real SW fans!

The destruction of Alderaan just became more emotional to me, and the original dialogue of the film now has more depth to it.

If, like me, you gradually wore down your original Star Wars (Ep4) VHS from viewing and hence can quote the film backwards, this is certainly for you. You will appreciate the humour and detailed extrapolations from these beloved scenes.

I also recommend for younger and newer star wars fans. The storys stand although I'd say original fans will appreciate the subtlety more.

Ups and downs of an anthology series

I love the idea of this but it's a really tough one to review. Took me a couple of attempts to get into it - some of the stories are enjoyable, others not so much, others still are so jarring against the Star Wars backdrop as to be off putting, then the next hits you with an emotional gut punch.
HOWEVER, the final Death Star battle chapters Re written and performed so well, with the big John Williams score in the background, that as a 40 year old man I was taken back to the excitement from first time I ever saw Star Wars. Utterly brilliant and for that I can forgive any issues earlier in the book.
Just heard they're releasing a version for Empire, and I can't wait.

An enjoyable new take on a well known story

Plenty of drama, some comedy, some tragedy - what more do you need? I skipped a couple of chapters but that's the benefit of these being short stories. Best chapter is probably the trash compactor creature's life story. Defo give this a punt if you like Star Wars.
