Summary

In this essential Star Wars Legends novel, discover the legacy of Rogue Squadron and its fabled pilots, who became a symbol of hope throughout the galaxy.

They are sleek, swift, and deadly. They are the X-wing fighters. And as the struggle rages across the vastness of space, the fearless men and women who pilot them risk both their lives and their machines. Their mission: to defend the Rebel Alliance against a still-powerful and battle-hardened Imperial foe in a last-ditch effort to control the stars!

Its very name strikes fear into enemy hearts. So when Rebel hero Wedge Antilles rebuilds the legendary Rogue Squadron, he seeks out only the best - the most skilled and most daring X-wing pilots. Through arduous training and dangerous missions, he weeds out the weak from the strong, assembling a group of hard-bitten warriors willing to fight, ready to die. Antilles knows the grim truth: Even with the best X-wing jockeys in the galaxy, many will not survive their near-suicidal missions. But when Rogue Squadron is ordered to assist in the assault on the heavily fortified Imperial stronghold of Blackmoon, even the bravest must wonder if any at all will survive....

Rogue Squadron

I read the book 27 years ago and now here it is in full on audible. A must listen for any Star Wars fan. I hope the other books in the X-Wing series come out in full too.

Not as good as I remember it

Firstly, massive plaudits as always to the brilliant Marc Thompson. There really is no better narrator for Star Wars.

I read this when it initially came out. I was thirteen at the time and loved this book beyond reason. So I was excited as hell to hear (finally) an unabridged recording by the best Star Wars narrator out there. Unfortunately I think nostalgia (and the fact that I’m a lot older now than I was originally) have clouded my opinions on this book. Time has not been kind to it.

Wedge Antilles, ostensibly the protagonist, seems to be there only be default, as it’s clear the author is much more interested in Corran Horn (his own creation) … and who is, unfortunately, a Mary Sue — good at absolutely everything, zero flaws, beloved by everyone, has every female character lusting after him in a way that now just feels wrong. It’s frankly a bit cringey in parts.

Also, some of the dogfight sequences go on far too long and get bogged down in technobabble, to the point where it’s sometimes quite tricky to tell what’s going on.

With all that said, it’s still a lot of fun and I’m going to be listening to the rest of the series when it comes. Here’s hoping they continue into the (far superior) Wraith Squadron books of Aaron Allston, which is where the real fun in this series begins.

so glad to have an un-abridged version

this book is great and the quality of the audio book format is great so long as you get an un-abridged version. can't wait for the next un-abridged in the series to release

Great read, decent novel.

Marc Thompson is always great but the novel is a bit overreated to be honest. I found myself zoning out during the in depth description of dogfights. Also the main character is a bit of a Mary Sue.

Just as I remember

Decades ago I read these books, some I devoured in less than a weekend even though I’m a fairly slow reader and they’ve sat on my book shelf, the spines getting a little worse with each rereading over the years as I go back to them from time to time. This version of the book does it right for me, the squadron is all present and nicely fleshed out as the beginnings of the war with Iceheart and the battle for the future of the republic begins(with the exception of the y-wing commander whose lines the reader seems to yell, irrelevant of context or location).
Just like when I read the books as a kid I got through this really fast and happily lost myself in the world of the expanded universe and I can’t wait for more.

If your going to listen to an x-wing book, make it this one, the abridged versions just leave you remembering all the bits they’ve left out, you get half a tale when you should be getting a squadron.

Proving Legends Are The Best.....

Don't let the legends status fool you. These tales are as good as they ever were. Narrated and presented with sound affects and musical score at key moments. Highly recommended.

just as good as I remember it.

SO good to hear tales of the OG star wars characters and the superior "legends" characters. A rip roaring tale well performed with plenty for a traditional Star Wars fan to enjoy.

Thanks for remembering the EU/ legends

I'm so happy Disney finally gave star wars fans something we wanted to make up for the crappy movies/ cannon books of the last few years.
Please for the love of God make the rest of the X-wing series books into unabridged audiobooks. Hell make the rest of the EU/legends into unabridged audiobooks I'll happily pay whatever they cost.

Literally one of the Best Star Wars stories ever told.

There is a reason Disney is turning to rogue squadron as it’s inspiration for its next Star Wars movies. They need the help putting together a coherent narrative and the rogue squadron series of novels is some of of the best Star Wars content out y to there.

Don’t miss out!

Hope more of this series come to this format.

This is a Legends Star Wars audio recording the way it should be, the whole text. Marc Thompson does it again, one of my favorite Star Wars narrators. The author is excellent as well, a favorite among many Star Wars fans I'm sure.
