Summary
It began as the ultimate voyage of discovery - only to become the stuff of lost Republic legend...and a dark chapter in Jedi history. Now, at last, acclaimed author Timothy Zahn returns to tell the whole extraordinary story of the remarkable - and doomed - Outbound Flight Project.
The Clone Wars have yet to erupt when Jedi Master Jorus C'baoth petitions the Senate for support of a singularly ambitious undertaking. Six Jedi Masters, 12 Jedi Knights, and 50,000 men, women, and children, will embark - aboard a gargantuan vessel, equipped for years of travel - on a mission to contact intelligent life and colonize undiscovered worlds beyond the known galaxy. The government bureaucracy threatens to scuttle the expedition before it can even start - until Master C’baoth foils a murderous conspiracy plot, winning him the political capital he needs to set in motion the dream of Outbound Flight.
Or so it would seem. For unknown to the famed Jedi Master, successful launch of the mission is secretly being orchestrated by an unlikely ally: the evil Sith Lord Darth Sidious, who has his own reasons for wanting Outbound Flight to move forward...and, ultimately, to fail.
Yet Darth Sidious is not the mission's most dangerous challenge. Once underway, the starship crosses paths at the edge of Unknown Space with the forces of the alien Chiss Ascendancy and the brilliant mastermind best known as “Thrawn”. Even Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi, aboard Outbound Flight with his young Padawan student, Anakin Skywalker, cannot help avert disaster. Thus what begins as a peaceful Jedi mission is violently transformed into an all-out war for survival against staggering odds and the most diabolical of adversaries.
Timothy Zahn's unique mix of espionage, political gamesmanship, and deadly interstellar combat breathes electrifying life into a Star Wars legend.

Excellent
Zahn is truly a master novelist. I would consider this to be the first in the Thrawn series.

Amazing
Timothy Zahn is by far my favourite Star Wars writer the complex way he lays plots down is second to none, he make you feel smart for spotting what will happen but also content with how thrawn finds a way you never expected
Any Star Wars book by Zahn Which contains thrawn is worth your money or credits, especially if narrated by either Marc Thompson or Jonathon Davies !!

For Thrawn fans
Good story supported by some of the best characters in the franchise. If you like Thrawn then this is the book is for as you as you see the character's introduction to the Star Wars world long before the original Zhan's Thrawn trilogy.
Brilliantly told by Jonathan Davis.

one of the best star wars novels
Probably one of the best Star Wars novels of all time. It fills every niche rather than diving all into one. It has jedi, it has sith plans, it has strategy, it has spare battles, it has Thrawn.
Just a really good SW novel

Ending missing
The ending is missing from the audio version versus the book. Disappointing for an avid Thrawn and Zahn fan.

love this story
provides so much insight into Thrawns early years and leaves so much room for speculation and possible ideas for new cannon stories

Enjoyable early thrawn legends book
Thrawn is always fun and Zahn always delivers. Zahn is the crown prince of Lucas’ galaxy and thrawn remains one of the finest inhabitants of a galaxy far far away

Hard to get into with curent canon
First of all, I love Zahn. But this is a hard book to get into if you got used to current canon, cause it has many contradictions.
Also, even bigger problem for me is that I got used to Marc Thompson's Thrawn impression which is copying Lars Mikkelsen's Thrawn from Star Wars Rebels. Marc is brilliant while Jonathan is just decent. Not bad, but not nearly as good as Marc who can do so many voices that he practically turns each book into one-man radio drama.
If you love new Thrawn books and are used to new canon, skip this one for now.
