Summary
After the end of the Enterprise™'s five-year mission, Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, and Dr. McCoy struggle to establish new lives apart from one another and the starship. The newly promoted Admiral Kirk is placed in charge of a specially created Starfleet division and attempts to defuse a critical hostage situation; Mr. Spock, who, in the midst of a teaching assignment on Vulcan, finds the one thing he least expected; and Dr. McCoy, whose unerring instinct for trouble lands him smack in the middle of an incident that could trigger an interstellar bloodbath.

an amusing diversion, but not a quality one
tarot meets vulcan history in a tale that has more in common with Harry potter than star trek. be warned that the nimoy parts are short clumsy bolt-ons added presumably for the sellability of the nimoy name alone.
but if you need a star trek fix and aren't fussy this'll do.

Adapted does not mean abridged!!
I read this book many years ago and it became a firm favourite of mine. This audio version does not do it justice. It has been cut to pieces. There was meant to be chapters about Kirk settling in as Admiral, Spock meant a girl and became engaged, Riley had his own story too. All cut for no good reason. Disappointing

Unexpected
I think this is the story prior to one of the Star Trek movies. I didn't expect that it will sustain my interest up to the end of the story. The plot is simple, but interesting.
I want to listen to more Star Trek books by Dillard. I also like Nimoy and Doohan's narrations.

New discoveries peaked interest
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
There are many fascinating documentaries on what today's astrophysicist are discovering and what people like Stephen Hawking say might be possible someday. Could traveling past the speed of light be possible someday? The book, it is written beautifully and very gripping. I love every minute. 2 hrs is not enough; I want a series from this author. Call me greedy. Deserves no less than 5 stars.

James Doohan narrates
Of course, I love "Scotty" and do not at all mind listening to him narrate. But they advertise this as being narrated by Leonard Nimoy. In fact, there are two or three, five minute segments, narrated by him. The rest is James Doohan. Surely at this point it must be possible to get a computer to convincingly read a book, and sound like the real Leonard Nimoy? And if they could, then there could be a Nimoy-read version of any title you want. And I would have his voice read everything to me, exclusively. Well, him and Wil Wheaton. Nobody reads Scalzi like Wheaton. :)
My biggest complaint about audio books in general is the tedious, overly affected narrators. There are a couple of very common ones whom I particularly loathe. Several really excellent novels have been just ruined for me by hammy actors reading them.

If you want a TOS in radio for …here it is
Very well narrated and keeps you engaged. Story was just like listening to an episode of TOS through a radio drama…..helped pass the time while traveling on the road!
