Summary
Ally Marshall isn't just a wolf shifter - she's a Seer. But a girl doesn't exactly need special powers to know that Derren Hudson despises her entire kind. Disdain practically rolls off the Beta of the Mercury Pack... disdain mixed with a healthy dose of desire. And no matter how much the ruggedly handsome male appeals to her, this is one call of the wild she's determined to ignore.
After one betrayal too many, Derren doesn't have much use for Seers - except for Ally. Forced into acting as her protector, he finds himself intensely and passionately drawn to the woman who incites his primal instinct to claim. And when enemies target the pack, Ally's gift may be just what the Mercury Pack needs. Can he put his distrust aside, or will he force himself to turn his back on the one woman who makes his inner beast howl?

pretty much as expected same as Phoenix pack
Would you listen to Spiral of Need again? Why?
Probably not though I enjoyed listening to this It's too similar to other books in the series I wouldn't have a problem to listen again if it was all I had available
If you’ve listened to books by Suzanne Wright before, how does this one compare?
Yes and its a variation on the same formula as in the previous books. It probably works as a stand alone book but is probably better read in sequence ie after the Phoenix pack book 4.
If you haven't read them - Read Feral Sins first, its a better book! It also introduces some of the characters. Most of the rest arrive in books 2 to 4.
The story is very predicable - brooding male and feisty female thrown together against their will, both have issues to work through. There is the usual combination of dangerous situations and bedroom action sticking to the same formula as the other books.
Its fairly obvious what is going to happen before even the first chapter is done with characters clearly defined as good or bad - its really just an enjoyable romp.
Bedroom scenes better listened to with headphones or the car windows closed to avoid embarrassment !
Have you listened to any of Jill Redfield’s other performances? How does this one compare?
Jill Redfield does her usual good job, but some of the characters do sound the same as the others. She really brings the books to life though. I am sure they are better with Jill's narration than just reading the printed version

Predictable and same as all others
I'm sad that I didn't enjoy this book. I was expecting great things as I'm a big fan of this author. I guessed the book ending pretty early on and it was pretty boring from then. Sex scenes always better than usual authors but again they could be pretty much lifted out of each book in the series.
I feel this was a waste of money to be honest :(

FULL OF ACTION, HEAT & GRRREAT CHARACTERS
After Zeke finds his true mate his long-time lover Seer Ally happily moves aside but her life becomes a living Hell because of the petty jealousies, vicious set-ups and pack manipulation caused by his mate. Ally is a strong female and can handle herself and all the trouble and she walks away from conflict every time but she's reaching her limit of bullshit and she knows it's time to leave.... but where to? Ally's very good and powerful friend Cain secretly hears about the trouble even though he is in prison and calls in a favor from someone who owes him one.... the broody, unsociable and yet loyal Beta from the Mercury pack.
Darren hates Seers and so too does most of the pack (for differing reasons) but he'd given his word and he can't go back on it even though he's tempted but as soon as he sees Ally his wolf sits up and takes notice. Oh, they both fight their attraction but the animal instinct wins over. They both think they can keep their relationship at just sex because misunderstandings are there from the start so they never suspect they will eventually become fierce, loving and protective true mates. But this is what happens..... especially when Ally's abilities as Seer saves lives, when her kickass no nonsense attitude is respected and when the sex brings them closer together.
With lots of different pack action as Ally settles in, there's murder and kidnapping attempts, bloodshed as fur fangs and claws come out and lots of suspicion as to who and why the drama is focused on the members of the Mercury pack. Also Zeke's bitchy mate isn't anywhere near finished with her deadly plans. As with SW's other Shifter books the sex scenes are great and the Hero is a dirty mouthed Alpha type who knows what he wants and loves and fiercely protects it when he gets it.... because nothing stands in his way (and don't you just love em).
Worth a credit? Dual POV's, addictive sexy and action-packed storyline and a great narrator who brought all the scenes and all the many characters to life which made a good book into an awesome listen. It would've been worth a credit but no need to spend one as I just buy books that are under $10 and save the credit for a more expensive (but maybe not as enjoyable) listen.

Drama is Such a Turn off!
This books is filled with 'skanks', bi***es, jealous spiteful women--ALL quotes from the book. This is how the women talk about other women. I love Suzanne Wright. This was just not very sexy. The drama between the women was more important than almost getting murdered. On top of that alpha's talking to other alphas rudely, the inability of wolves to understand each other, or even intuit lies makes no sense.
Worst line, "I'm an Alpha and you're a Beta. That means I am more." How do packs let other people walk onto their land and challenge pack members.
The sex was great and energetic and hot, and the price was great! Just not enough to counteract the lack of a good quality story.

Seriously over the top
Would you try another book from Suzanne Wright and/or Jill Redfield?
I don't think so. I've tried 3 times already.
What could Suzanne Wright have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
The last 3 books I've heard are starting to sound exactly the same...the dialogue, action, sex... The characters behave & communicate the same no matter who it is, so really they all could have just been one person. Also, the dialogue between characters is super weak and only focuses on raunchy sex-and not that I'm opposed to a well written, descriptive scene-but Suzanne's scenes are just...well trashy.
I don't know what she could have done beside scrap the book and start over.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
I don't really know if Jill did anything wrong as she just tried to work with what was given butt it did make me not want to hear her whining ever again.
Was Spiral of Need worth the listening time?
Absolutely not. Unfortunately, I was on a roadtrip and was stuck listening to this.
Any additional comments?
I don't recommend this book at all, unless you like a book with no point or substance.

So much sex that it detracted from the story
Would you try another book from Suzanne Wright and/or Jill Redfield?
I would not likely listen to another Susanne Wright story unless the formula for the story changed a bit. I didn't dislike Jill Redfield's performance so I wouldn't hesitate to listen to her again.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
I think I enjoyed the overall story but because I was soooo annoyed by the excessive, repetitive sex, I ended up fast forwarding through the last several sex scenes. There was so much unoriginal sex that it made the story difficult to finish. I believe part of the intent was to attempt to capture the animalistic nature of the wolves but there wasn't anything creative about how it was done. It felt gratuitous and unnecessary after awhile. It was also basically the same sex scene over and over and over. He rammed his rooster into her kitty cat... rooster, kitty cat, F-bomb, rooster, kitty cat, F-bomb (well it didn't feel right to say the words she used over and over but you can figure it out).
What about Jill Redfield’s performance did you like?
It was easy to listen to her and how she read the story flowed well.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
I wanted to learn more about the characters, especially the supporting ones. I even went so far as to read reviews for the other books involving those characters. After reading the other reviews one person said it is the same formula for all of them. Another person said "erotic" but if the same formula for all is followed, I'd guess less erotic and more of a turn off than a turn on. I'm not willing to use a regular credit to find out.

Not impressed
This book reads as if a teenager learned how to swear for the first time and feels the need to inject cursing wherever they can. Story is pretty contrived and even the main characters are boring.

Awful sex scenes
Awful sex scenes (very bad porn sounding and I detest the use of “baby” as an affectionate term for adult women) But the story was fine. Hopefully they will improve as the series develops.

You are mine.
How many times has this line used in the Phoenix pack books and this Mercury pack book? Lost count there are so many. What about the phrase, your ass is mine, it's this or that body part that is mine? Yep too many times to count. The phrases are overused and tends to make the leading man very 2 dimensional. For the first two Phoenix books and this new Mercury pack book the women are strong unless in the bed and then they are whiny and beg. To be honest I hated hearing the men order the women to do specific sexual acts and the women doing it as if the"had" to. However I do enjoy how the heroine and hero of each story shows up in the later stories.

Narrator pulled off some cheesy lines!!
Although not my main genre of interest, I like a good romance book every now and then but this one didn't sit right with me. The story has a lot of good points but the empty sex scenes (and there are a lot of them) didn't say romance to me. It said would be rapist with willing victim, which didn't make sense considering the male lead's past. After the first few times, I got sick of listening to cringe-worthy lines and hit fast forward. "Oh, you know you like it."
And I wish the author would've used a better term of endearment other than 'baby'. Who knows, maybe I fast forwarded over the couple sharing real loving moments instead of ripped from a cheesy porn video dialogue. I've read a few books over the years that have made me blush or fan myself but the scenes here made me just want to zip my cardigan closed tight and hit fast forward.
Although generic in nature (every guy is hot, hot, hot), the scenes (when everyone has their clothes on) are the good kind of generic and made me smile, laugh, grow indignant and so forth so I felt for the characters, to a degree. If you either don't mind masochistic bed habits or don't mind skipping whole chapters, then you might enjoy this book...This is just not a series for me.
