Summary
It is a hot summer's day in the tourist village of Avebury. A man sits outside the Red Lion pub, waiting. He sees a woman with three young children, two of them running ahead while their sister dawdles behind. A child's voice catches on the breeze.
For want of anything more interesting to do, the man watches. He sees nothing sinister or threatening. Even when another figure enters his field of vision, he does not react. The figure is ordinary - male, short-haired, stockily built. But he is moving fast, at a loping run.
And then it happens.
In one swift movement, the running man grabs the youngest child and carries her away. Still the man outside the pub does not react. Suddenly, a white transit van bursts into view, its engine racing, its rear door slamming shut. The child and her abductor are inside. The child's sister rushes forward. The man outside the pub jumps up....
The tragedy begins at Avebury. But it does not end there.

Superb!
Another fantastic, detailed and gripping story; which is only improved by the incredible narration skills of John Telford. I had read the book many years ago, but this didn’t in any way lessen the tension and lovely flow of the story which does, as in every one of Goddard’s books, pull the reader in by use of cleverly interwoven and well researched facts with clever twists and turns.
The narration only adds to the enjoyment. A beautiful timbre of voice with clever nuances for each character led me to listening without pause for many hours in a desire to get to the end and unravel the ‘truth.’ Fabulous!

Robert Goddard never disappoints.
The story was equally exciting and nerve wracking to the end. The narrator is engaging.

Not his best by a long way
Whilst I love Goddard’s knack of weaving historical elements into great contemporary mystery writing - this feels like he missed the mark and tried to force something that - at the end of the day - wasn’t very interesting - into said formula. The historical aspect just isn’t gripping or focused enough - so becomes disparate, laboured and I lost interest about 2/3 of the way through. Not his best!

A well balanced and written story
Up to the usual standards of Robert Goddard, with lots of twists and turns and incorporating a little factual background detail based on an historical mystery to hold it all together. john Telfer is an excellent narrator for these typically "English" stories. Well worth a listen as, unlike his latest Max novels, it is self contained and brought to a satisfactory conclusion by the end of the book.

Entirely enjoyable entertainment
Coming from near the M18 I had a little giggle every time Umber sighed (and he sighs a lot).
But this is a very enjoyable ride from the moment it starts, and very well narrated. I figured out some of it along the way but there are too many twist and turns to get them all.
I was returning to Robert Goddard after some while. I thought I’d read this before, but it turns out I’d only read the back cover. Anyway, I’m glad I was giving it a ‘second’ go. I was in no way disappointed.

Excellent and very much enjoyed
I didn’t realise when I chose this book that it would be centred around my very own hometown of Malborough, and include references to Avebury, Ramsbury, Pewsey, and Savernake Forest. The accuracy of the author aided my enjoyment no end, every detail was accurate, and this truly enhanced the experience. The story itself was intriguing, and right up until the last paragraph it was difficult to see where it all knitted together. I shall be reading more of this author.

A good storyline but so many characters to keep up with. The end seemed predictable with the last few chapters unbelievable.

Another winner from Goddard
As usual, there were plenty of plot twists, and lots of historically accurate background. The narration was very good and easy to listen to, which is always just as important as the content.
