About this listen
The most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes, the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his or her own instincts and ideas. It is the source of one of Emerson's most famous quotations, "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds." This essay is considered a watershed moment in which transcendentalism became a major cultural movement. An American classic.

Not sure about the reading
I've read this essay tens of times and it never occurred to me to phrase the words as read here. The essay is urgent vibrant vital and important but none of this comes across in the reading. I suggest don't listen to this but buy the essay read it and keep it with you. it's a true and enduring classic.

Great philosophy for modern times
The whole book is superb, it contains a philosophy that the Western World is sadly forgetting about and I recommend to read it often in order to survive in modern world's confusion. However I find the narrator's accent and voice difficult to understand in this version.

Terrible performance
It seems like Alana Munro has only recently learned to read. Horrendous performance. The essay itself it great but ruined by a lm awful reading.

The Narration
Read the book. The narration is appalling. It’s read so monotone, but worse, it is just read in a way that makes no sense. It’s like it’s read without punctuation. It is just truly awful.
