Summary

Moving to remote Shetland has been unsettling enough for consultant surgeon Tora Hamilton; even before the gruesome discovery she makes one rain-drenched afternoon...Deep in the peat soil of her field she is shocked to find the perfectly preserved body of a young woman, a gaping hole where her heart has been brutally removed and three rune marks etched into her skin. The marks bear an eerie resemblance to carvings Tora has seen all over the islands, and she quickly uncovers disturbing links to an ancient legend. But as Tora investigates she is warned by the local police, her boss, and even her husband, to leave well alone.

And even though it chills her to the bone to admit it...something tells her their concern isn't genuine.

The first of my Sharon Bolton books!

I was hooked from the beginning. I have followed her since eagerly waiting for every new book. Now I'm waiting for her newest book next spring 2018. There's just no one like Sharon Bolton when it comes suspense and a good thriller. She is one author not to be missed!

Shame about the narrator

It took me a while to get into this one. I listened to the Audible book and I think it was because the narrator sounds as if she's in her 60s while the protagonist is in her early 30s. Once I'd got past that I did enjoy the book. The narrator does a good job but just isn't right for the book.

The plot is very dark and disturbing, with a dark and brooding Shetland setting. Ms Bolton always writes such great characters and although I didn't like Tora at first, she did grow on me. I was also more than excited that Dana Tulloch made an appearance in this book, before the days of Lacey Flint.

This isn't my favourite Sharon Bolton book, but is still a very enjoyable read.

Narrator is wrong for this book

I have listened to many of Sharon Bolton’s books and have been blown away by the amazing story lines, characters and the narrators.
I had delayed listening to this book because of the reviews regarding the narration and unfortunately they have been spot on - the main character sounds in her sixty’s instead of 30’s and even the emphasis on certain words and sentences is unfortunately very grating.
That being said it is testament to Sharon’s skills as a writer that I couldn’t stop listening! She is a fabulous talent and I adore her books.

Brilliant…

Great Thriller, legends, boogy men, conspiracies, tension, betrayal and brutality - with a quality narration. What more could you ask for in Celtic Noir? Sharon Bolton is a genius storyteller!

An excellent if disturbing read

This book certainly has pace. It is the second of Bolton's that I have read and the second to be incredibly creepy. You do sometimes find yourself wondering if so many things could happen to one person but, as each incident can be explained within the plotlines of the story, it only serves to keep you more on the edge of your seat. There are still times when you find yourself thinking it's all rather improbable but it didn't take away from the enjoyment - if one can say that about a book that has you anxious from start to finish!

Sacrifice; believe able fiction.

Gripping and spine chilling fiction that could so easily be fact. Man's inhumanity to mankind well portrayed and narrated.
