Critic reviews

"A police procedural that delights the reader with a strong sense of place. Tartan Noir at its best." (Sarah Ward, author of In Bitter Chill)

Awful stereotype

The male detective in his late 30's needs his hard drive checked. obsessed with ogling women and teenagers. The caveat of "he's just a man after all" plays through it totally detracting from the story line. I gave up after he was swooning over the mortician and her eyebrows

Stick with it

The characters appear unsympathetic and coarse initially so it took me a while to get into the story. I never really warmed to any of them but I did want to know what was behind it all. It tries to deal with difficult and sensitive subjects involving the services and PTSD, nationalism and bigotry, misogyny, family relationships .... There's a lot packed in there so at times it could touch only the surface but there was enough to be thought provoking. I enjoyed the focus being on the devolved nations and some of the dialogue was realistic. The ending is nicely set up for a sequel and I'll probably take a look.

Sexist 90s detective

Honestly, genuinely can’t believe a modern woman wrote this story.
If you read this review before the story, just imagine the novel was written by a 60 year old bloke in the 90s and ignore the mentions of google, Facebook, and mobile phones. This will make it much more palatable!

Good story

The narrator is dreadful, he overhams it, like he's in a 1920's thriller. Shame really because it's a good story.

Great narrator

Glad to have found this series. Gritty but has some lighter touches too. The narration is good and that's so important. I look forward to listening to the rest of this series.

Well written and gripping

Really enjoyed this. The plot was exciting but believable as were the characters. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for more books by this author.
