Summary

The definitive new biography of Her Majesty The Queen by one of Britain’s leading royal authorities.

With original insights from those who know her best, unseen papers, new interviews with world leaders and a fresh perspective on the longest reign in British history, Robert Hardman tells the full life story of the most famous woman in the world.

Like her father and grandfather before her, Elizabeth II was not born to be monarch. Yet she has reigned through more change than any sovereign since 1066. From her accession as a young mother of two in 1952 to the age of COVID-19, she has become a global phenomenon commanding unrivalled respect and affection.

Queen of Our Times follows the astonishing journey of the quietly determined young woman who has gone on to lead her family and her people through good times and bad for longer than most people have been alive.

This is a must-have study of dynastic survival and renewal, spanning abdication, war, romance, danger, tragedy, drama, brickbats, laughter heroes and villains right up to the present day. Best-selling author Robert Hardman brings his long experience and expertise to this richly entertaining portrait of a world leader who remains as intriguing today as the morning she came to the throne aged 25.

Wonderful look at the Queen and History

Absolutely adored this book. A fascinating insight into the life of Queen Elisabeth and a wonderful reminder of the role she has played in our recent history. A lot of nice little details which made me smile and well up at different times. Amazing to see the part she has played. I loved the story of her going to visit Germany and mentioning her previous meeting with Konrad Adenauer, the founding father of post war Germany.

A really must read or listen to book on our Queen

Brilliant narration
Easy to listen to and a very enjoyable fact heavy story of T he Queen
As a small 8 year o!d boy and by virtue of my elder sisters baby sitting job to a week-long family, our family were invited to watch the coronation on a 3ft high cabinet with a 12 inch screen, augmented by a large magnifying told-over screen (making the pictures of the coronation larger), I was for the first time a real life moving celebration of our Queen. I was enraptured by the technology and spectacle of that day in June 1953, and have watched most of the royal family's "adventures etc) over my lifetime. My father claimed to be a republican and at every opportunity tried to scold my sister and me about watching and talking about royalty. We both ignored him and it is our over-riding suspicion that if our father had met the Queen he would have been over-awed and supplicant to her and her family. My sister and I always suspected he was an inverted snob. Our younger brother wasn''t in the least bit interested in royalty or politics (a bit of a philistine don't you know)
My sister had loads of scrap books in honour of the Queen and the wider royal family, and was hooked, and to a lesser extent me also.
The Queen's father died about 3 weeks before our beloved fraternal grandmother who was also a 'retailer's, and it beggars belief that our father was the way he was.
All I can say and believe is that God Save our Queen, and that this book confirms my loyalty and love of her. Great book.

Another Royal Hagiography

Yet another fawning, uncritical (except for anything vaguely left of centre) royal hagiography. For more realistic revelations of royal antics listen to:
“And what do you do?” By Norman Baker

“The palace papers “ by Tina Brown

“The Royals” by Kitty Kelley

They’ll open your eyes to the true nature of the royal family and it’s acolytes….

Brilliant

This is the best royal book ever written. It is beautifully written, with such honesty. Robert Hardman is always lovely to listen to, and he reads this book so well. I could listen to it again.

Superb

I enjoyed listening to the author's narration of his story of the life of 'Elizabeth the Earnest' while pottering at home and in the garden. The 25h 22m was therefore lengthy but not weighty. Robert Hardman obviously has a great deal of respect and affection for HM so may not be totally unbiased in his views.
However this timely account, pre the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, of 7 decades of dedicated service feels authentic and balanced. I was pleased to hear that HM 'absolutely loves being Queen', has a healthy work-life balance, is warm, forgiving, funny and, when required, can exercise 'soft power' with an eyebrow - a welcome antidote to the fictional portrayal of the cold, unhappy monarch in the Netflix film, The Crown. I confess I had to ask Auntie Google clarify 'the silken glove of Geidt'.
I learned a great detail about our Queen and particularly enjoyed hearing about her encounters with various prime ministers and world leaders throughout the Commonwealth and more. I like who she likes and I like her a lot. I reckon she's a good judge of character. Thank you for the good read and the insight into the life and work of Elizabeth II. This biography may have helped with the 'Transition' of the Royal Family into future generations but this lady, despite losing her beloved Philip, has not stopped mothering her family, her nation and commonwealth yet.
I have now bought the book as it is one to keep on the bookshelf; it has arrived safely and in good condition.

very interesting subject matter and well narrated

the queen is always an interesting subject matter but this book is more than just pure admiration. rather it is a balanced view peppered with interesting sometimes charming tid bits. the author read it well, in a good pace and clear and concise. Great book and very recommended to those interested in the monarch which this book cleverly explains is more than just a tourist attraction or waving from balconies.
