Summary

As the Cold War faded into history, it appeared to have been replaced by a new conflict—between Islam and the West. Or so we are told. After the events of 9/11 and the advent of the 'war on terror', this narrative seemed prophetic. But, as Peter Oborne reveals in this masterful new analysis, the concept of an existential clash between the two is a dangerous and destructive fantasy.

Based on rigorous historical research and forensic contemporary journalism that leads him frequently into war-torn states and bloody conflict zones, Oborne explains the myths, fabrications and downright lies that have contributed to this pernicious state of affairs. He shows how various falsehoods run deep, reaching back as far as the birth of Islam, and have then been repurposed for the modern day. Many in senior positions in governments across the West have suggested that Islam is trying to overturn our liberal values and even that certain Muslims are conspiring to take over the state, while Douglas Murray claims in his new book that we face a 'War on the West'. But in reality, these fears merely echo past debates, as we continue to repeat the pattern of seemingly wilful ignorance.

With murderous attacks on Muslims taking place from Bosnia in 1995 to China today, Oborne dismantles the falsehoods that lie behind them, and he opens the way to a clearer and more truthful mutual understanding that will benefit us all in the long run.

Very well put together in 5 parts,

Peter gives great context to events that I have known about growing up in the west, I learned about many historical events that I was unaware of. This has given me a clearer understanding of why Islam is perceived in a such a negative way.

the birth of knowledge

take this as you will.
be aware of your own bias, before hand.
wrestle with the ideas you hold to be true.
Continue to question and think. Be aware of the nature of your own thinking. Take note of your own discrimination both positive and negative.

Peter Osborne on the money again.

An amazing journalist willing to challenge previous held views and change his mind based on the evidence.

Exceptionally Revealing and informative

I have read and listened to so many books, but a book so detailed, well researched and accurate is very rare to find. I couldn't recommend this book enough, whatever you do, please take time out of your busy schedule to read this book to educate and inform yourself.

Excellent and challenging book

I have been impressed by other books by this author and was interested to see what he had to say on this subject. It was very informative, well researched and rather disturbing. It is always good to keep challenging our received ideas and to be prepared to think carefully about things we have heard about other people, many of which can often be wrong.

Most beautiful and earnest compilation

There are so many amazing characteristics of this book. Full of facts based on 20 years of research, heart touching stories, and above all it's a master piece crafted with sincerity and professionalism.
It is one of the most special books I have come across so far. I love it, an absolute gem. Peter Oborne thank you!!

I simply cannot recommend this book highly enough

It's an absolute must for anyone who ever thought negatively about Islam or Muslims. The depth of reporting. The deconstruction and investigation into such aspects as "Muslim grooming gangs" and Birmingham schools "Trojan horse" are simply mind blowing. The lengths some people, states and organisations are going to, in order to destroy Islam is unbelievable, and can only make me conclude there's something about Islam they fear. A religion that has been so battered over decades is still the fast growing religion. Muslim's have not abandoned their religion like others. People are converting to Islam. There's something these shadowy characters fear, and now I'm interested to find out what it is. The author has done an outstanding job.

A great read! Well researched!

The only thing I’d say is Islam is a religion and not a culture. Writers need to make this distinction more clear.

Eye-opening

Brutally honest and fearless in speaking the Truth. Sadly I fear that Oborne’s debunking of established falsehoods will meet with sidelining rather than engagement.
