Critic reviews

Brilliant, enlightening, practical. A gem of a book. (British Journal of Guidance and Counselling)

One of the most reliable (and readable) guides to what is involved in counselling...Jacobs' well-organized and comprehensive summaries of the main theories and his illustrations of psychodynamic counselling drawn from his own work will inspire students and trainees on counselling and therapy courses. They will also interest (and create envy) in more experienced readers. (Professor Andrew Samuels, Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies, University of Essex)

This is one of a very small number of books that manage to describe simply, but not simplistically, what analytic work involves. (British Journal of Medical Psychology)

Unlistenable, sadly

I am a huge fan of Michael Jacobs’ work and I was really looking forward to listening to this title. Unfortunately the narration makes it practically impossible to focus on the actual content of the book. The intonation is slightly off. I do empathise with the difficulty of narrating textbooks but sadly the tone of this narration borders on patronising. I could have tolerated that given my eagerness to listen to the book’s content, but having every single reference read out - including page numbers! was just too distracting. I simply could not focus!

Were the publishers to recall the audiobook and edit out the references (which could easily be supplied on an accompanying PDF), and possibly re-record the narration, I may be willing to give the book another chance. As it is now, I have sadly returned the audiobook and asked for a refund. Quite unfortunate really given there’s nothing wrong with the actual content or the narrator’s voice.
