Summary

The collection of 10 absorbing tales by master psychotherapist Irvin D. Yalom uncovers the mysteries, frustrations, pathos, and humor at the heart of the therapeutic encounter. In recounting his patients' dilemmas, Yalom not only gives us a rare and enthralling glimpse into their personal desires and motivations but also tells us his own story as he struggles to reconcile his all-too-human responses with his sensibility as a psychiatrist. Not since Freud has an author done so much to clarify what goes on between a psychotherapist and a patient.

The audio version of the book includes an exclusive interview with Dr. Yalom.

Wonderful book - one quibble about recording

A small but very irritating point detracted from what is otherwise an excellent book and an excellent reading: there is no pause between chapters. Seeing as each chapter always builds to a poignant and thought-provoking ending, often with a particularly carefully chosen final sentence, the breathless catapult into the next chapter is very jarring and spoils what should be a very satisfying dramatic moment in the storytelling. A careless oversight and something that could be easily fixed.

Great Book, Odd Narration

The book is wonderful, a Yalom classic. The reading/narration, as some other reviewers have noted, is a bit odd. For me it was too fast and unvaried in tone. After a few minutes, I’d realise I wasn’t listening anymore. The reading is too monotonous, lacking pauses for emphasis or a breath of air. Slowing down the speed on the Audible app made it more listenable.

Interesting and alarming

The book is read and written nicely, the stories are interesting as are the patients. Sometimes I was laughing out loud, other times pondering the issues, people and situations. However there were many moments when I was alarmed at the author's interpretation of what the clients were presenting or his responses and I finished the book feeling uncomfotable. The author seemed very self-focused with little strategy, understanding or structure for helping patients. Sometimes I actually felt stressed or irritated for the patients and had to turn audible off, but mostly it was thought provoking, I like books that make you think, like this one.

Iconic book

This is an exceptional book in my opinion. I could not stop listening to these stories! As a psychologist myself, I found the stories of these patients and Yalom's own methods truly inspirational.
Because this book is written in true story format, without much theoretical explanation, it reads so easily and is in my opinion just as interesting for non-caregivers who are just interested in human nature. Can't wait to read more of Yalom's work now. As a psychologist, it can be so overwhelming trying to stay up to date with all the schools of thought and all the theories. This material makes for a truly organic and inspiring read without being so scholaric. A book to remember!

Ps. 4 stars for performance because it's a little annoying there's no (tiny) pause between chapters. The narrator is great.

Great read, informative and interesting.

As a trainee therapist I really appreciate when theory and practice come together in a book. Makes it easy to understand, and remember. I loved every second of this book.

Great book

Enjoyed different accents put on by the narrator. But please add some pauses between the chapters! So annoying the next chapter starts straight away, ruining the effect from the closing remarks in a previous story.

one of my favourite books ever

for someone who's interested in psychoanalysis, I found this book very intriguing, educational to some extend, but still simple and catchy. I always recommend it to friends

Disappointed

Think this book is more geared towards people in the USA rather than the UK. It started off fairly promising but I rapidly lost interest & just didn't get it, I thought a lot of it was just ludicrous and now very dated.
I really enjoyed The Examined Life by Stephen Grosz and would thoroughly recommend it rather than this book.
