Summary

"Highly recommend Adhara for all fans of PNR and romantic suspense." (Smart Bitches, Trashy Books)

Werewolf meets human. Werewolf snubs human. Werewolf loves human?

Julien Doran arrived in sleepy Maudit Falls, North Carolina, with a heart full of hurt and a head full of questions. The key to his brother's mysterious last days might be found in this tiny mysterious town, and now Julien's amateur investigation is starting to unearth things the locals would rather keep buried.

Perhaps most especially the strange, magnetic manager of a deserted retreat that's nearly as odd as its staff.

Eli Smith is a lot of things: thief, werewolf, glamour-puss, liar. And now the manager of a haven for rebel pack runaways. He’s spent years cultivating the persona of a flippant sophisticate to disguise his origins, but for the first time ever he’s been entrusted with a real responsibility—and he plans to take that seriously.

Even if the handsome tourist who claims to be in town for some R & R is clearly on a hunt for all things paranormal. And hasn't taken his brooding gaze off Eli since he's arrived.

When an old skeleton and a fresh corpse turn a grief errand into a murder investigation, the unlikely Eli is the only person Julien can turn to. Trust is hard to come by in a town known for its monsters, but so is time. As they're trapped together in a crumbling mountain lookout, their secrets will have to come out...or both of them may end up buried.

Such a good mystery

I really enjoyed the narrative of this mystery and of course Eli was on point being his usual slightly frivilous self. I'm really glad we got a look in Eli's head in this one and I'm super excited to see where the next few go.

Also cameo with Cooper and Park at the end who are the best couple ever.

Compelling story

As a spin off from the first Adhara series, the world building is already there. The story had some similarities, like the wolf feeling vulnerable and submissive towards the human. The mystery was nice although not easy to follow. The romance took a back seat.
The narration was fine. Not every paragraph was up to Leslie's previous standard but I was able to keep listening.

Sorry narrator - feels like you’re trying too hard

I really didn’t bond with the new narrator for this book. Joel had big shoes to fill picking up a spin-off series, but it feels like he’s trying too hard to put emotion and drama in to the book that’s not there - let the story do the work. I’ll return it and just get a hard copy.

New narrator

After listening to the author’s previous series with a different narrator it was disconcerting to hear old characters with new voices. Disappointing and threw me out of the story several times. The story is worth the read but I think I’ll stick with the books vice the narration.

Great story terrible narrator

I love all of Charlie's books, but this narrator has to go. He sounds like he's reading it ironically.

Amazing!!

This book is the perfect spinoff to Adhara's Big Bad Wolf series. I absolutely loved it and can't wait for more books in this brand new series.

Good spin off

I have wanted Eli’s story since the moment we met him. So we have Eli working on getting the haven ready to take in the rebel runaways to help them heal and then move on to a better life. Julien is in town trying to find out what truly happened to his brother who was there looking for the monster in the woods. I loved that we had dual POV! Those are my favorite because I always want to know what the MC’s are thinking and to see things through their eyes. I had the bad person figured out almost from the beginning, but never really figured out why. If you are a fan of the Big Bad Wolf series, you will love this spinoff!

action pack

I have to start by saying I have not listened to or read the the other series. If fact, did not know that this was a spin off series until I read some of the reviews.
At no time did I find myself lost or confused.

I also do not understand all the reviews that say how much they do not like the new narrator? First, Joel Leslie is one of my favorite narrator and is almost an automatic buy just seeing his name as the narration. And more importantly, if this is a new series, then it makes sense that it would have been a new narration.

The story itself is complex, you have a brother trying to find why his younger brother, who had just died, left these critiques clues in a childhood hiding spot. As the story unfolds the two MC stumble upon a plot that so many layers it keeps you guessing throughout the whole story.

Joel Leslie did an amazing job keeping the whole tale entertaining from start to finish.

I can't wait for from books

Excellent story, well read

This was a wonderful book. a rare spin-off that's as good as the original series. Like another reviewer said, I was surprised I did not miss Oliver and Dayton because this story was so engaging. I very much look forward to the next book in the series.

I'm surprised by all of the reviewers complaining about Joel Leslie. I have always found him to be a fine voice actor when reading predominantly male parts. He has excellent timing and pacing for dialogue, bringing to life humor and irony exactly where appropriate.

It took me quite some time to get used to the narrator on the original series. I kept listening because the stories are so good but I was glad to have a new narrator here.

I very rarely give five star reviews but I thought this title and performance warranted a top review. Definitely worth the credit.

Amazing!

I thought since I missed Cooper and Oliver so much, it might taint how much I would enjoy this one. It did not. Very quickly, Eli stole the show with his wit and vulnerabilities. And Julien… with his grief and sweet good guy demeanor, how could you not adore him?

I can’t wait to see where this goes!

can't wait for more!

This was an excellent book. A great start to a spin-off series that I'm sure will be as big a hit as Big Bad Wolf. Even if you haven't read Big Bad Wolf series, I think a reader could comfortably pick up this book and be pulled into the story, but to get a deeper understanding (and therefore a fuller reading experience) of certain aspects, I would recommend going back and reading between now and book 2's release in 2023. I can't wait!
