Summary

The second book in Michael Wood’s darkly compelling crime series featuring DCI Matilda Darke. Perfect for fans of Stuart MacBride, Mark Billingham and Val McDermid.

When elderly George Rainsford goes to investigate a suspicious noise one night, the last thing he expects to find is a bloodbath. A man has been killed and a woman brutally beaten, left for dead.

The victims are Lois Craven and Kevin Hardaker – both married, but not to each other. Their spouses swear they knew nothing of the affair and, besides, they both have alibis for the attack. With nothing else to link the victims, the investigation hits a dead end.

The pressure is on for investigating officer, DCI Matilda Darke: there’s a violent killer on the loose, and it looks like her team members are the new targets. With no leads and no suspects, it’s going to take all Matilda’s wits to catch him, before he strikes again.

Critic reviews

"At one point in this tense thriller, the endearing protagonist reflects that the investigation is like having 'all the pieces of the jigsaw but…from different boxes'. Matilda Darke is right - and only in the final pages is the full picture revealed…" (Chris Simms)

"Crackling dialogue, dark wit and an exciting ending. Recommended if you liked Happy Valley." (Mark Edwards)

"DCI Matilda Darke is going places." (James Oswald)

A trashing of Sheffield...not acceptable.

I enjoyed the storyline but not the portrayal of Sheffield. The author clearly has his own grudges against the fine City.

Mouth noises

Having to return as I can’t stand the narrator’s constant spittle and mouth sounds. Such a shame as I was enjoying the story but can’t bear it anymore. Something to be aware of if you’re sensitive to such things.

Slow start, but got better

There is some fast paced action in the book, but a lot of action nonetheless. It's a good story, well narrated.

filled with stories all in one

I really had many suspicions about who did what but up till it was revealed i had no clue. i mean, some tiny clues were dropped but then smoothly covered with convincing counterparts so it was gripping and i enjoyed it! will read thr next ons!

Another solid book

This wasn't my favourite story in the series, a bit slow at times, but still worthy of 5 stars

Graphic but well written police tale

I liked the D.C.I. Darke character and the female characters are strong but believable in this tale and have the more traditional roles allocated to male chatacters . Unsurprisingly as this is a tale about a murder squad ,it is more gory and graphic than I would have predicted at times.
The author knows his craft and the narrator is skilled and the book engaged me.

Fabulous - but narrator mispronounced Beauchief

I really enjoyed this second book in the Matilda Darke series. It grabbed me right from the start and is well written and cleverly plotted.

Matilda is such a brilliant, very likeable character. In this book she is stll struggling with grief after the loss of her husband, and is still haunted by a previous case which ended tragically. Her murder team detectives are back too and we are gradually learning more about them..

A word about the narration. One of my pet peeves is mispronunciation of place names. In this book the Beauchief is mentioned. Anyone from Sheffield or who knows the city will know that it is not pronounced Bow-Chief. It is Bee- Chiff or Bee-Chief. Apart from that minor irritation I enjoyed the narration.
