Summary

From award-winning author Sandra Owens comes the first book in a suspenseful new series full of adventure, sparks-flying romance and companionship between a Navy SEAL, a local artist, and their dogs.

Navy SEAL Jack Daniels (save the jokes, he’s heard them all) and his trusty Belgian Malinois sidekick, Dakota, are back home in Asheville, North Carolina, after a bomb left them scarred. Unable to accept that he’ll never be able to return to his team, Jack is looking for a miracle. What he isn’t looking for is a permanent relationship, though he’s open to a no-strings distraction at the magic hands of gorgeous local potter Nichole Masters.

Nichole is on a losing streak with men. Her ex-boyfriend won’t stay gone, a competitor is out to ruin her business and even her rescue pup, Rambo, is refusing to get in line. A chance run-in with a navy SEAL turned canine companion trainer might solve the dog problem. The fact Jack is easy on the eyes doesn’t hurt, either.

But when Nichole feels like she’s being watched, Jack is the only person she can turn to. He’s a protector and problem solver by nature and training. Accepting his protection is one thing - Nichole didn’t count on falling in love.

"With realistic characters, witty banter, a well-written storyline, and a bit of action thrown in, Keeping Guard will draw readers in from the first page until the last." (Harlequin Junkie)

Disappointed

Wanted a search and rescue dog themed story with a little romance, this is more of an explicit insta-love romance with minor appearances or storyline for the K9.

Great narration!!!!

I've listened to a few of Sandra Owens books before and they were pretty good. I really liked this book and I think this is the start of a good series and will definitely continue when the next book comes out. The narrator was new to me and I thought he did a nice job.....sexy voice kept me listening til the end. Going to check out some of his other books too. There's humor, romance, intrigue, and just enough steam to fog up your glasses❤❤. I really liked Jack Daniel's character and his really smart and sweet dog too. I love stories that have animals that are relatable and relevant to the stories. You're going to love Jacks grandmother and her friend Mary. She was hilarious!!

Great beginning to a new series

Sandra Owens is one of my top five authors. I have never been disappointed with her books. She writes well with excellent storylines and wonderful characters. I get pulled in and can't put it down. I'm excited for this new series of combining military personnel with service dogs. It makes for heartfelt stories that will assuredly warm our hearts as we fall in love with both the characters and their dogs.

This story is worth a re-read. In fact I have now read the ebook as well as listened to the audio. Jack Daniels is protective, honest, and fun. His swoon worthy actions most probably just made him my favorite for this series. I did want to throw my Kindle a couple times. I love it when an author pulls on my emotions. Dakota, his retired military dog, completely won my heart. He was just as much a hero as Jack. Nichole Masters is an artist who is confident in her business, sweet, and fun, but lacks confidence in romance. She is in desperate need of help, not only with her rescue dog Rambo, but several irritants in her life. Their story is filled with sweetness, uncertainty, and pain, but ends with a tear worthy HEA.

There are several wonderful side characters in this book, but two of them had me blushing and laughing out loud. Grammie and Dirty Mary were hilarious and unquestionably brought embarrassment and laughter into the lives of those they love. Anytime they were mentioned, you'd just have to grin ear to ear and hope you don't wake your husband because you couldn't put the book down to go to sleep.

One scene had my heart racing. Well, there were several, but I actually stopped reading, put the song UNCHAINED MELODY on, then read through it twice. This is an unforgettable scene in this book! Think the movie GHOST. I absolutely cannot wait for Noah's story next!

Patrick Zeller did a good job narrating. He has a deep smooth voice and handles female voices well.

Very enjoyable!

This is a romantic suspense type book that includes great characters and dogs. What more could you want! The story has the romance of Jack and Nichole with Jack fighting to overcome the crush of not being able to go back with his SEAL team. The narration is very good, though not every voice is "perfect." This is a very entertaining introduction to a new series.

Okay

The girls voice was not right and sounded annoying most of the time. The story was okay but the “ghost movie” thing should have just played out and not been talked about on the first date- just weird timing. I finished it but definitely did not get lost in it. However, my Kryptonite is small town, dogs, and military/police!

I will listen to it again.

Very enjoyable. I laughed out loud multiple times. The dogs' personalities were priceless. Jack is the perfect every day hero.
