Summary
A brand-new series by New York Times best-selling author Susan Stoker.
The Refuge is a place to heal. Where those who have experienced traumatic events can go to heal. It’s run by seven former military men who’ve seen more than their fair share of the ugliness in the world.
Friend-zoned since childhood by the most amazing man she’s ever known, that doesn’t stop Alaska Stein from doing whatever’s necessary—including lying to the military—to be by his side when Drake ends up in a German hospital after a mission gone wrong. The broken man in the bed is not the boy she once knew. Despite that, and despite years apart, when Drake turns his gaze to Alaska, he sees her. Looks beyond the plain-Jane exterior to his childhood friend beneath. He may never be anything more than a friend, but putting her needs aside to see him whole is a sacrifice she’s willing to make.
Drake “Brick” Vandine walks away from the SEALs after his recovery, building a life around helping others struggling with PTSD. But he can’t walk away from Alaska. She was there for him in his darkest moment, and her spine of steel saw him through one of the biggest challenges of his career. And now, although she lives half a world away, she’s still his anchor, his daily dose of support as he and several friends build The Refuge. A place of peace, a place of healing. But, for Drake, also a place of loneliness.
When the unthinkable befalls Alaska during a trip to Russia, it’s Drake’s turn to drop everything and race to her aid. Safely back at The Refuge, he just as quickly realizes what he’s failed to see for two decades—his oldest, dearest friend is the love of his life.
A revelation that may be too little, too late. Because Drake’s brought the enemy right to their door.
Deserving Alaska is the first book in the Refuge series. Each book is a stand-alone, with no cliff-hanger endings.

Brilliant
This is my first audio book that I’ve listened to and I will say I thought it was amazing! A little slow at the beginning but worth it overall! The chemistry between the to main characters was electric and I love how it was built up to them being together. I must say I am biased though as I’ve read a lot of Susan stokers books and I have loved every single one of them so I didn’t expect to be disappointed with an audio book

Drake
Love the dual narration of Savannah Peachwood and Aiden Snow
Drake and Alaska knew each years ago.
Drake has PTSD, and survivor guilt, after an event where all his SEAL team all died, leaving him very badly injured. Alaska, who was working in Germany at the time, goes to the military hospital in Germany and lies to them telling them she's his fiance.
Alaska working in secretarial roles to escape her alcoholic mother. She has hopped from job to job, seeing a lot of Europe on her way. Four years after seeing Drake , she finds herself in a situation she turns to the only person she knows to help, Drake.

I want to visit the Refuge.
This is the first book in a new series from Susan Stoker and it is another great start. I really liked all of the characters and I enjoyed the backstory of Drake and Alaska. They might be my new favorite Susan couple. As one of the other characters said that have the most important thing any relationship can have. A foundation. I really liked Pike, Tiny and Tonka. The narration was also great. The only thing I didn’t really enjoy or care about was the bad guy. His motives didn’t seem believable. But other than that this is another great start to an amazing new series.

Just didn't do it for me
I will start by saying I am a Susan Stoker fan, have listened to almost all of her books, and I've never been disappointed. However, there is a first time for everything I guess. I don't know if it was the narration or the storyline itself, but it was so boring that I found myself drifting off and would have to go back and listen to a chapter over again. I am disappointed because I was looking forward to this book - but I just can't say that it was awesome or anything. Savannah normally does a great job at narration, as does Aiden, but they both fell short in this book. The storyline itself was dragged out in parts that it didn't need to be, which is when the drifting off started. If it can't capture and maintain my attention, then I'm not going to try and go to a second book. Maybe I'll read these instead of listening to them. I don't know. I won't suggest not wasting a credit or money, because that just seems harsh - I'm just putting my opinion out there.

Exciting new series
Deserving Alaska by Susan Stoker was a page turner right from page one and an exciting start to The Refuge series. I really liked Drake and Alaska’s backstory and that after many years apart, their friendship remained true and that they were able to support each other during their time of need. The author did a wonderful job handling PTSD in this story and the narrators’ performances conveyed all the different emotions that the characters experienced. I devoured this audiobook and could not stop listening until I got to the end.

Fantastic!!!
I have read many of Susan Stoker's books and she never fails to create action packed stories with romance, suspense, plot twists, and amazing characters readers fall in love with and Deserving Alaska is no different. Alaska and Drake (Brick) have been life long friends and would no matter how many miles separate them, they are always willing to drop everything to help each other especially if one of those situations calls for a former Navy Seal who will do anything it takes to save those close to him. The men of the Refuge may have demons from their time in the military but they are amazing men who are true alphas who have each other's backs and protect their women at all costs. I'm familiar with Savannah Peachwood and I absolutely loved her narration, now narrator Aiden Snow is new to me but I really his performance as Drake and the others in this audio book. Both he and Savannah nailed the emotions and the overall voices of the characters. I really loved Deserving Alaska and I can't wait for the release of Deserving Henley.

Why do they end so quickly!!
I adore all of Susan’s books, you get so vested in each of the characters as well as the side characters. Can hardly wait for the rest of the series.

This story grabbed me right away and never let go. Tearful moments a plenty throughout the book along with some steamy love scenes. The story line was good and very relevant. Narrators were a great choice 👌. Looking forward to the next book!

Meehh.. it’s okay
Okay I’ve heard of this author from other reviews of another author’s books (Riley Edwards) maybe it was me or I got the wrong book for me to start with. Yeah there was a bit of suspense due to the abduction of the heroine and an obsessed villain but that was it. I wish there were more action within the storyline. I actually kept on stopping listening to the audio, mind you I love Aiden Snow… listening to his voice is the best thing in this book.
For me the book was just okay. Don’t know if I’ll continue with the series or try a different one from this author.

Totally Loved This Story
Even though I've been a huge Susan Stoker fan for the past few years, I don't think I've loved one of her books so much since the seal of protection, badge of honor, and delta force series. I was hooked from beginning to end. I hated turning off the book to sleep the first night. Alaska and Drake's friendship and relationship was so sweet and romantic. They were the perfect couple. Oh, and everything about the refuge was great. The whole setting for the refuge was just perfect and what the men did for people in need was simply wonderful. They were so kind, understanding and helpful. And I loved how all the men lived on the Refuge property. This way whenever someone in Deserving Alaska and in future books in the series needs help, the men are already just seconds away. I may have listened to this book when it came out on the 2nd, but I'm thinking about reading it again. The story is that awesome and the narrators were also great. Super Book. Definatly a 2022 favorite.

Loved meeting all these new characters!
What a tale! I really fell into this story! It had me from the beginning and didn’t let go. Both of the characters are written wonderfully! I came to love both for different reasons.
I did listen to this on audio. Savannah Peachwood and Aiden Snow did an outstanding job!
