Summary

From the best-selling author of Weightless, A Love Letter to Whiskey, and Revelry comes On the Way to You.

What makes you happy? That was the question Emery Reed asked me the day we met, and I couldn't give him a single answer. I could have said my dog, or my books, or yoga - but I just stared. And then, I got in his car.

It was crazy to take a road trip with a stranger, but after years of standing still, he was my one-way ticket to a new life, and I wasn't going to miss it. We shared the same space, the same car, the same hotel room - and still, we were strangers. One day we'd be laughing, the next, we wouldn't speak.

Emery was surrounded by impenetrable walls, but I wanted in. Discovering his journal changed everything. I read his thoughts - words not meant for anyone's eyes - and the more I learned about him, the harder I fell. It turned out nothing made Emery Reed happy, and I wanted to change that. I earned his trust by violating his privacy, and as wrong as it was, it worked. Until one entry revealed a darkness I never knew existed, a timer I never knew was ticking.

Suddenly, what made me happy was saving Emery from himself. I just didn't know if I could.

Powerful book.

Exceptional, different but so good and a memorable one for me. I don’t have the right words to review this book as I don’t want to ruin it for others. I highly recommend it.

Depression?

Depression.... has so many different meanings to different people. I Can’t claim to have understood how deep and dark it can be to some people. I’ve had different milder levels of depression but never understood the deeper debilitating levels, especially when everyone and everything surrounding the individual is great or at least normal. This story gave me a new understanding. Thank you! Loved this story!

hitting home

when this story first started I didn't think it was going to be any good but decided to give it a chance. I am really glad I did. I can relate to the characters in this story because I deal with depression, anxiety and panic attacks every day. I don't want to deal with people ever but that is what my audiobooks are for. when I go shopping, I put on a book and my headphones and listen to that instead of the people. it really works. back to the book. I really like it. it shows how one person supports the other without wanting anything back and she understands when he is having a bad day. cooper tries to give him the space he needs but it isn't easy for her. good job to the narrators and the author.

Kandi does it again

The emotions that these two go through are intense and so emotional.

I cried and laughed. I loved how Little Penny was finding herself and who she really was through the book. And I loved how Emery would give her bits and pieces of himself. Until he finally gave her his all.

Loved it. Another awesome read and listen by Kandi.

So....moving!

Although I personally have never battled depression and/or anxiety, I know it is - they are - very real and tangible. This book made me see what someone's struggle could be like for them. I really loved this story with its pain and love and struggle and hope and vulnerability and strength. All beautiful! All necessary! And it's definitely worth a credit. or two! Enjoy!

Spellbounding

This book is a romance but so much more. It discusses depression and how it can completely take over someones life, but with the right person, it too can be conquered.

Beautiful and Heartbreaking

This book is a beautiful and heartbreaking tale of two people driving across the US trying to find what makes them happy. I love the characters in this book. They were brave and weak at the same time and so well written that I wanted to put my arms around them and tell them everything would turn out fine. The narration on this book was even good. One of the best books I've ever listen to. I will be listening to it again. I wanted to start from the beginning and listen through it again after it finished. Great book.

Excellent Narration, touching story

This book is well worth a credit. This is the first book I listened to by Lacey Gilleron and she was amazing and believable, without having an abrasive voice. I also liked that story painted a realistic picture of how someone with depression may feel day to day, without the book being a downer. Kandi Steiner managed this while writing a heartfelt love story.

The best book I have ever listened to

This book is my favourite all time Kandi Steiner read, and to have it in audiobook format means I was able to enjoy it on the go. (apologies to people who witnessed ugly crying!)

Cooper is a young woman who was born into a family who did not truly appreciate nor love her, and after overcoming a terrible accident decides to save, plan and hope for a better future. Emery Reed enters the diner where she works and asks her one simple question 'What makes you happy?' It is a question that would later go on to change her life and inspire her to throw caution to the wind and embark on an adventurous road trip with him.

Emery is an opposite of Cooper in many ways and is battling depression. Throughout their adventures, you learn more about the complexity of Emery's issues but also Cooper's own struggles and hardships. Through their journey, they are discovering not only about the places they visit but also themselves and each other's issues. Their relationship is rocky, beautiful, complicated and raw and I was completely hooked on the whole concept of the book.

The book really made think and puts things into perspective and definitely makes you understand an issue that many of us struggle and battle with. I did not expect some of the twists in the book and found it very moving and emotional.

I have never been emotionally affected by a book in a long time, but this really did hit me and give me a lot of feels. The book dealt with a few topics that were personal to me and it was nice and refreshing to have a book put a voice to human feelings and emotions.

A beautiful story with extremely adorable chemistry between characters and an all-around good listen. The narration was on point, it was captivating and easy to follow along to and I will happily have this on repeat.

I'd recommend to anyone looking to listen to something a bit different, or a book that is relatable and not just your typical cliched romance. If you love angst and romances that hit right in the jugular, then this will do it.
