Summary

The award-winning author of The Hate U Give returns with a powerful story about hip hop, freedom of speech - and fighting for your dreams, even as the odds are stacked against you.

Bri wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. As the daughter of an underground hip-hop legend who died right before he hit big, Bri’s got massive shoes to fill. But when her first song goes viral for all the wrong reasons, Bri finds herself at the centre of controversy and portrayed by the media as more menace than MC.

And with an eviction notice staring her family down, Bri no longer just wants to make it - she has to. Even if it means becoming the very thing the public has made her out to be.

This Narrator is EVERYTHING

Brianna, Bri for short lives in a poor part of the neighbourhood, her family is poor and her single mother raised her and her brother after her father, who was a famous up-and-coming rapper was murdered, her mother has now lost her job.

Her auntie is part of a gang, and drugs and guns are pretty much every day things, but Bri doesn’t want to be part of this, her auntie is her music manager, not her life coach.

You see, Bri is a rapper, just like her father, and her dream is to make it big, so school isn’t a huge part of her life, but rapping, that is everything!

After finally getting her chance to perform her stuff at the local “ring” Bri nails-it, and makes a bit of a local name for herself, unfortunately for her, this isn’t always a good thing.

🎧🎧 – Narrated by the incredibly talented Bahni Turpin, this book is well worth a credit…..”But wait, does she rap?” OF COURSE SHE DOES, and she does it brilliantly

What a Story!

When I first saw the film The Hate You Give I was told about the book and how amazing it was so I thought to myself let me read The Come Up cause I’m sure it will as good maybe even better and I can say this book did not disappoint.

As a rap fan and a person who loves a good underdog story The Come Up has the perfect mix of both and the way Angie paints the picture of this world is amazing

Great for my daughters. We read/listened together and all really enjoyed it. Were lucky enough to see Angie at Southbank as well

Flawless

I actually burst into tears listening to Bri's Ring performance at the end of the book. I had got goosebumps with the earlier raps but that last one - along with the whole message (is that the right word? I feel completely ineloquent) pushed me over the edge! Another 5-star rating from me for an Angie Thomas book. My 5-star rating means: everyone needs to read this book!

Angela Thomas is a genius. Her character-portraits are flawless. Her dialogue sounds completely authentic to me. And yet another outstanding performance from Ms Bahni Turpin.

Incredible narration

I really enjoyed this book and I'm so sad it's over! The plot and characters were larger than life - I really looked forward to my time with Bree each day.

The narrator was absolutely brilliant - her rapping skills really brought the book to life!

I almost didn't finish it....

At first I absolutely loved it and couldn't stop listening. The narrator did a fantastic job! However, halfway through I started to get annoyed with Bri and her silly decisions and took a break. I'm glad she was able to turn things around. One drawback is the glitch in the Epilogue.

Overall, it's a good modern book that gives insight into rap genre.
