Summary

No Simple Death is a murder mystery with a touch of romance, set in the Dublin suburbs. It will appeal to fans of authors such as Peter James, LJ Ross and Ruth Rendall.

When Detective Mike West is called to investigate a murder in a Dublin graveyard, suspicion immediately falls on a local woman, Edel Johnson, whose husband disappeared some months before. But then she disappears. Evidence leads West to a small village in Cornwall, but when he arrives, he finds Edel has got there before him. Her explanation seems to make sense, but as West begins to think his suspicions of her are unfounded, she disappears again.

Is she guilty? West, fighting an unsuitable attraction, doesn't want to believe it. But the case against her is growing. Back in Dublin, his team uncover evidence of blackmail and illegal drugs involving Edel’s husband. When another man is murdered, she, once again, comes under suspicion.

Great storytelling, more leading female characters?

I really like these Sergeant West crime novels, great plots and a detective team who high functioning, likeable and emotionally intelligent. My only gripe is that all the police officers and other characters in professional roles are male! Women are consigned to being intelligent partners, mothers/ sisters or survivors of crime. I doubt this reflects even rural Ireland these days, so could the author mix it up a bit more?

Very readable

I must admit I was attracted to this story as it's set in Dublin and it's lovely to hear the gorgeous Irish accent - my grandparents were Irish so it brings back nice memories. Valerie Keogh crafts an interesting story with the lead character Detective Sergeant Mike West and his team as dedicated, likeable people. I have read hundreds of books about all aspects of crime and although some of the plots may seem a little far-fetched I think the stories might be a bit boring if they weren't but the actual police procedures are very accurate. This is the first book in the series about this detective and I'd like to read more to get to grips with the characters, including his love interest!!

Monotonous tone

I think this book would’ve been a bit more enjoyable if the narrator was a bit better. The flat monotonous voice of the narrator was difficult and uncomfortable to listen to. In an audible, for me at least the narrator is important. I’m afraid I can’t and won’t finish listening to this book .

Ok but a bit predictable

Not a bad plot line, back stories revealed as it went along. A bit predictable towards the end.

The narrator, however, has a very slow, almost morose, style. I had to speed it up to get any kind of pace to the story!
