Summary

From New York Times best-selling author Erik Larson comes his first venture into fiction, an otherworldly tale of intrigue and the impossible that marshals his trademark approach to nonfiction to create something new: a ghost story thoroughly grounded in history.

Pioneering psychologist William James leads an expedition to a remote isle in search of answers after a family inexplicably vanishes. Was the cause rooted in the physical world...or were there forces more paranormal and sinister at work? Available only on audio, because as Larson says, ghost stories are best told aloud.

A group of researchers sets sail for the Isle of Dorn in the North Atlantic in 1905 to explore the cause of several mysterious disappearances, most notably a family of four who vanished without a trace after a weeklong holiday on the island. Led by Professor James, a prominent member of the Society for Psychical Research, they begin to explore the island’s sole cottage and surrounding landscape in search of a logical explanation.

The idyllic setting belies an undercurrent of danger and treachery, with raging storms and unnerving discoveries adding to the sense of menace. As increasingly unexplainable events unfold, the now-stranded investigators are unsure whether they can trust their own eyes, their instincts, one another - or even themselves.

Erik Larson has written a terrifying tale of suspense, underpinned with actual people and events. Created specifically to entertain audio listeners, this eerie blend of the ghostly and the real will keep listeners captivated till the blood-chilling end.

Perfectly Haunting...

...in every sense of the word. As meticulously researched and beautifully written as you'd expect from Erik Larson, with his solid background of "real life death, disaster and destruction", and exceptionally well narrated by Julian Rhind-Tutt, I simply cannot fault this delightfully entertaining story.

In my opinion, it is stylistically and atmosphericaly reminiscent of Algernon Blackwood's "The Willows", William Hope Hodgson's "House on the Borderland" and Shirley Jackson's "...Hill House" (which the author actually makes reference to himself in his own epilogue), and I would strongly urge anyone who has read - and enjoyed - any and/or all of the three aforementioned novels to buy this immediately - I promise you you won't be disappointed.

What happens when the innocuous becomes noxious

A group of psychic investigators led by the famous William James investigate a mysterious cottage on an equally mysterious island where a family has completely disappeared. The cottage is quiet and peaceful - too peaceful - and strangely has not succumbed to the ravages of time. Then mysterious things begin to happen and it seems that the cottage and maybe the island itself is playing with them. This was a gripping listen and Eric Larsen cranks the tension up nicely - or not nicely - and if you were expecting you a haunted house story you will be in for something altogether more disturbing! There are ghosts and then there is malevolence. Strangely, it reminded me of a cross between The Shining and The Haunting of Hill House, which Larsen cites as a influence. Thankfully, we have an English voice narrating and what a soothing voice Julian Rhind-Tutt has!

Enjoyable

I've now listened to this twice and enjoyed it. I liked the weaving in of real people and events the plot was quite absorbing The fact that the author is American was evident in some turns of phrase that were just wrong in the mouths of English characters and I found this a little jarring. The narration was excellent, as I've come to expect from JRT.

Fantastic performance of a good story

I feel like this is one of - if not the - best ghost stories on Audible. Well performed with a likable cast of characters and excellent tension, it reminded me of M. R. James.
It is NOT a fast paced story - which I personally liked, we get plenty of time to experience the mystery surrounding the characters and get to know them. This also has the benefit of meaning the slightly disappointingly weak ending only takes up a very small percentage of the run time.
There are some cons, without spoilers these are:
1. As with many books, the main character is given a journey to go on to improve and become a better protagonist, HOWEVER the way this is framed makes him seem very annoying, petulant and silly at times. And if you pay attention, the author's method of trying to make it appear that the character is overcoming adversity actually is just... showing that the character never achieves anything meaningful, they just sort of... do things...
2. The ending, although a fantastic concept, feels rushed and under explored - its almost like the author had somewhere to be and just tied off every loose end with the least words possible. Again, I shall avoid spoiling anything, but I found the resolution of several plot lines unsatisfactory in the extreme, and the ending itself while very good for the type of story wasted a lot of the potential and intrigue which had been so carefully built - I hope for a sequel which makes better use of the setup but I doubt this will be forthcoming.
3. This is pure conjecture, but I personally believe that the ending was originally quite different and had a more heroic and satisfying result for the protagonist relating to his unique skillset, but this was then hastily discarded and replaced with what now exists. If so, I think this was a mistake.

Julian Rhind-Tutt's performance is absolutely stellar - a masterclass in ghost story narration, and I will be eagerly looking for more from him.

A most enjoyable audio book

The story starts out slowly, but builds up to a most satisfying conclusion. The main characters are likeable and I was sufficiently interested in the outcome to be carried along at a good pace. Rhind-Tutt reads the story convincingly without overdoing the accents. Larson has created a well thought-out ending that ties up any loose ends there might have been. I wish he'd written more fiction as I'm sure I would be delighted to read more from this talented authour.

Mostly good

I enjoyed this on the whole, although there was a bit too much technical information about radio waves for me. The mention of possums was extremely jarring and there were a few other random Americanisms that shouldn’t have been in there. Narration was very good.
