Summary

The body of a blonde young man found in the canal is discovered to be that of a journalist who had been claiming he was onto the story of a lifetime. The area where he was murdered turns out to be subject to a land dispute.

A young woman is adamant she remembers a childhood twin brother, but her father swears she’s an only child. And now a second young blonde is missing. Rachel King and her East Manchester CID team must determine what links this all together - or are they being led to draw connections which aren’t there? And if so, who is pulling their strings?

About the audiobook

The first in a thrilling new crime strand. DCI Rachel King is juggling her career and home life very successfully since her divorce. But now the girls are growing up and complaining she’s never home. And their dad has moved in next door! The last thing she needs is her criminal ex-boyfriend suddenly reappearing, especially when everything points to his involvement in her investigation. If she can’t keep her past in the past, will her future in the force be over?

If you like L J Ross, Joy Ellis and M J Arlidge, you’ll want to follow Helen H Durrant’s new team from their very first case.

About the author

Since childhood Helen H Durrant always longed to write and, after retiring from her teaching job, is now the author of three successful crime series - most regularly the Calladine & Bayliss books - set in the North of England. The Rachel King series launches Durrant’s fourth range in typical grim and gripping style.

Narrator ruined it

I’m sure Luci would be excellent for a children’s book, but she made nearly all the characters in this sound like excitable twelve year old girls - including several of the men. I tried several times to overcome it but in the end the story was defeated and I just couldn’t finish it.

Really good book

I couldn't stop listening, enjoyed the short, sharp chapters.
Such a good listen, Great storyline, bit gruesome for me in bits, but can't wait for the next book. Well read too.

Read by a primary school teacher terribly under rehearsed

If you are interested in this book read it don’t get it on audible. The narrator is the worst I’ve ever listened to. She obviously doesn’t know pauses are by punctuation and not the end of a line of script. No real attempt to change the voices of characters so it remained the same overacting tone throughout. I think there was an attempt at two accents but it was woefully poor. This ruined the story for me and I didn’t warm to any of the characters who were very one dimensional in the narrative I listened to.

I found myself imagining how it would have sounded in my head to try and get through the book. I think if I’d read it it would have been better but I only persevered so I could justify the review.

You’ve been warned! Read the book instead.

Voice

I found the reader’s voice too young for this particular story . There was not enough difference between characters .

Ruined by Narration

This may have been a good story but the narration took away all sense of drama or intrigue. It was hard to take seriously and sounded more like schoolgirl gossip than a police drama. V disappointed

Narrator

I liked the story line but the voice of the narrator got on my nerves. I found the pitch and accent very irritating. However I did persevere to the end.

Poor story and expect better from this author.

Personal choice I admit, but dreadful story teller for Audible. Loved authors other books, but will steer clear of this series!!

Poor choice of narrator, badly written

Lucia sounds too young to be a DCI. The story was weak, prose badly written and poorly read. Waste of a book credit.

Poor casting of narrator

I have never tried to listen to an audio book where the narrator has been so miscast. The lead character is a 39 year woman not a 15 year old teenager.
I’m afraid I couldn’t finish the book as the voice annoyed me so much

Disappointing

The story didn't hold me, read very poorly. Kind of a monotone whining throughout. Only finished it because I'm waiting for my next credit.
