Summary

"Just once I'd like to fly into a system where everyone doesn't want to kill us."

Tanis Richards has spent half her life on the Intrepid, guiding the great colony ship, and its two million passengers, across hundreds of light-years. She has risked life, limb, and those dearest to her to get this far.

Now she's within reach of her goal; the New Canaan System, and a normal, stable life. The kind she's only dreamed about. The only remaining hurdle is to strike a deal with the Transcend Alliance and trade the Intrepid's advanced technology for the star system.

If only things were so easy. The Intrepid's arrival has upset the delicate balance of power between the Transcend, the Orion Guard, and the Inner Stars.

Everything Tanis has ever hoped for is at risk as she fights to build the colony of New Canaan amidst the looming specter of war.

A great story

There were a few words pronounced differently from what I believe to be the correct pronunciation. That is the only minor criticism I have. This is great space opera and I'm expecting to listen to the rest of the series.

Not bad to much focus on relationships

This time around is a lot on bisexual homosexual and heterosexual relationship's which if left out would not affect the store what so ever. The only reason I could see this filler is to make the store fit in to a set number of pages. Otherwise I do like the story and the plot, just needs less fluff.

A Disappointing Return to the Series

It was several months before we were able to return to this series, and I was excited to see it back. Unfortunately it pains me to say that this is a let down. Instead of eating it up as fast as I could, I had to stop listening halfway through.

Firstly, Cris Dukehart is not Khristine Hvam, and I'm fairly sure this was a large reason there was a delay getting this book to Audible. Hvam was great all around, but Dukehart struggles. Too much overacting, unnatural inflection, and trying way too hard to give characters outlandish accents, especially with male characters. She'd do much better concentrating on reading naturally and fluidly instead of throwing her voice so much.

Unfortunately the writing this time around does not do much to help. The first half or more of the book is inconsequential to the plot, and is filled with cliche dialogue. It even includes a completely pointless and contrived "forced into arena fighting" chapter. I expected more from Cooper.

It kills me to say it but I might have to bail on the series. The drop in writing I may just be a temporary lull, but it appears the narrative switch is here to stay. It's a sizable and unfortunate step down from before that makes me can't help but cringe. Maybe I'll pick it up again in text form, but for now my heart is broken.

Glad i found this

I just recently finished the 'Intrepid saga box set' which included the first book of this series at the end as a continuation of that story. The ending of that book left me hangin off a cliff and for a whole minute i couldnt find anymore books in the Intrepid series and had a mini freak out. After taking a closer look at the box set i realised what the problem was and found this delightful little series and started buying up the books. This one held true to the rest and was full of wonderful characters, intriguing problems, perfect pacing and progression, tons of well written action sequences and all the moving parts came together very nicely. When a story contains an entire galaxy and all the governments and peoples and worlds that come with it theres going to be alot of different things happening all over the place and itd be easy for that to get a little overwhelming or confusing but the way this book is put together it doesn't seem too big at all. There are points where a decade or more will have passed but the transition from one time to another is seamless because of how involved we are with the characters and the inner dialog of the characters always catches us up in a subtle and informative way. Im so glad i found these books. Tanis is my hero. Id honestly be happy if this were less of a military space opera and more of a romance, base building, colony focused series. I just love the characters so much that i could listen to entire books of them just trying to set things up and get things going in there little corner of the galaxy. Of course that wouldnt fit alot of their personalities and it might mess up the dynamics of the plot so im happy with the way things are. The author does a really good job balancing things between character development and conflict as it is so i really am not complaining 😊

Just good fun and a wild ride!

Really really really enjoyed this book. I like the way M D Cooper writes. Different narrator. Frustrating when that happens. Not quite as good as the previous one. But if you like science-based fiction you will really enjoy this book!

Moving the story along.

Characters are as well developed as usual and introduction of conflict makes things more complicated and interesting.

Highly disappointed

After the first book I couldnt wait to get into the second book. Most of the book disappointed me and the end flat out pissed me off. You dont end a book like the season finale of a tv show with a big build up and a small partial conclusion, but leaving most of the conclusion hanging for the next book. Its a BS tactic for a book. Im not talking conclusion on the main story arch, but not even concluding the climax of this book. 3/4 of the book is just filler family life of one of the character and hardly even mentions the main character from the first book. Then right at the end the character comes back into the story arch with a whole different attitude and no back story on what shes been doing for 13 years and why all the sudden shes changed her whole perspective and attitudes. But the half way conclusion revolves around her and a side character that we hardly know.
If i had not already bought the third book i would probably not buy it. Such a huge disappointment after the first book.
