Summary

Harry Barnett thought he had left his military career behind, so he is startled when two figures from his past turn up on his doorstep after 50 years. An old friend has organised the reunion to end all reunions: a weekend in the Scottish castle where the ex-comrades took part in a psychological experiment many years before. They haven't seen each other since.

As they set off on their all-expenses-paid jaunt to Aberdeen, the old friends are in high spirits. But the cheerful atmosphere is quickly shattered by the apparent suicide of one of their party.

When a second death occurs, a sense of foreboding descends on the group. It appears that the past is coming back to haunt them, a past that none of them have ever spoken about. Their recollections are all frighteningly different. So what really happened?

Then when one of them uncovers an extraordinary secret, he becomes convinced that they will never leave the castle alive....

Too long but a darn good story

Wonderful narration for a complex story. It could have been shorter and still been a good story and the narrator kept me listening when things really did slow down but my first Goddard novel and I think I will look for another. Hard to write a synopsis that doesn't give the game away - and once the game is known, then it takes a lot of believing, but if you can get beyond that then just don those earphones and keep going. Not bad at all!

Enjoyable read

Beautifully narrated. Enjoyed catching up with Harry and Barry. Some thought provoking issues, stirred memories of the trawler which sank in the Irish sea

Brilliant

Definitely my favourite author presume this is the last of the series as Harry is in his 70s that’s a shame but plenty more to read by the same author.

Brilliant story

This is the third Harry Barnett story and I loved it just as much as the others.
Great characters and plot, sorry to get to the end.

Love Harry Barnett!

Enjoyed this last Harry Barnett novel. Some improbable adventures as always, but a great character.

Best of the three

Superb story, characterisation, and narration. Excellent all round, twists, turns, and entirely plausible from beginning to end.

Very good mystery, following characters from previous books.

A good story, well told. Some of the twists and turns were a bi incredible, as in hard to believe, but the continuing adventures of Harry and Barry were entertaining and engrossing. Made me think of Tin Tin’s mystery of the Black Isle.

Another great story by Robert Goddard

Another great collaboration between Robert Goddard and Paul Shelly who gave the characters life and humour in bucket loads. A great story that kept you guessing to the end. Brilliant!

Very good

Held my interest all the way through. I’d say the best if the 3 books featuring Harry B.
