Summary

Sheila O'Flanagan's My Mother's Secret is a thought-provoking and enthralling novel about a family reeling from the news that nothing about their parents' marriage is what they believed it to be. A wonderful listen, perfect for fans of Veronica Henry and Lisa Jewell.

When Steffie helps her two siblings organize a surprise wedding anniversary party for their parents her only worry is whether they'll be pleased. What she doesn't know is this is the day that her whole world will be turned upside down.

Jenny wants to be able to celebrate her ruby anniversary with the man she loves, but for 40 years she has kept a secret. A secret that she can't bear to hide any longer. But is it ever the right time to hurt the people closest to you?

As the entire family gather to toast the happy couple, they're expecting a day to remember. The trouble is, it's not going to be for the reasons they imagined....

Good book to listen to.

The reader had a easily understandable Irish accent which she changed for various characters, adding to the enjoyment.
I felt that part of the story was a bit weak...would anyone suddenly reveal those family secrets at a surprise anniversary party, in front of all the guests? I found you really had to stretch literary license to believe this.
The sub plots which emerged from the party and announcement, were however good, and the characterisation of Steffie was excellent.
Overall. A good book, if you accept the premise.

Easy to follow

I have never had audio books before. I enjoyed the luxury of just listening. It is an easy book to follow, once you learn the many characters, and an excellent way to wind down of an evening.

My Mother's Secret

I found this story a pleasant surprise. A real family tale but full of surprises and insights into human nature and Irish traditions with a happy ending!

accents ate terrible

This reader has a single repertoire of irish accents for everybook she reads and that means everyone has a flat Dublin accent- really grating to listen to.

Meh

A gentle, easy to listen to story. Some of the voices were a bit irritating, particularly the men’s. The story is a bit old fashioned.

A nice warm story

Easy to listen to as always by this narrator. Story was okay...not as dramatic as some of the authors other books but enjoyable just the same.

Easy listening

The narrators voice is perfect for the style of book and the book is easy to listen to relaxing by a pool with a lot of distractions

Rather dull

Found myself slightly irritated by the slow voice when narrator was reading male parts. The story was a bit drawn out and predictable and the narration didn't help. Did stick with it but rather dull.
