When amateur sleuth detective Kate Shackleton receives a dawn telephone call from her cousin, James, his news soon snaps Kate into wakefulness. The India office seek her on-the-spot help in finding a maharajah last seen on the Bolton Abbey estate. He has with him a hugely valuable diamond.

Investigative successes and good family connections put Kate in the highly trusted category. Perceived as 'establishment', Kate feels like an outsider in her sympathies. One thing she is sure of: her own skills and insights. Qualities that she is sure will help her unravel the latest disappearance on that fateful summer's day....

Good story

Although there is nothing wrong with the narrator she just doesn’t do the character justice .. Kate is a young widow , the narrator’s voice is far too old and just doesn’t fit

Kate Shackleton does it again.

Frances Brody has a lovy turn of phrase and sn entertainingly dry wit. This story combines so many strands, sunset of empire, cultural differences between poor and rich English and Indian and also the delightful tension between capable women and an establishment finding convenience in underestimating and undermining them. The story twists and turns so there is never a dull moment and Kate Dove gives a wonderful performance. Her voice reels you in from the start and her characters are delightfully convincing! i've already downloaded the next one.

Very enjoyable

This is the first book by this author that I have read, but I shall certainly read more. It was good to read an intruiging plot which combined contrasting ideologies in an unusual setting. I liked the characters and the hint of a romance in the last chapter left me hoping that there will be more books about some of the same characters.

A beautiful tale, beautifully told.

Another beautifully crafted, soft, gentle tale with many twists and turns - engaging, clever, intriguing and exciting. Love these books. Beautifully read as always. A rare gem.

Recommended

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes detective stories and a step back in time. The story was good and interesting. A perfect ‘next in series’ novel. Kate is a great character, I love her diversity and her courage. I find her a refreshing change to the more gory and forensic modern day detectives. Anne Dover is an excellent narrator and therefore very easy to listen to. I’m definitely going to the next one in the series.
