About this listen
A mansion, a title, and marriage to a wealthy Lord, Lady Eveline Cartwright has it all. Unfortunately, it's not enough to prevent her from being bludgeoned to death one night in the study of Merisham Lodge, the family's country estate in Derbyshire. Suspicion quickly falls on her ne'er-do-well son, Peter, but not everyone in the household is convinced of his guilt. Head kitchen maid Joan Hart and lady's maid Verity Hunter know that when it comes to a crime, all is not always as it seems. With suspicions and motives thick on the ground, Joan and Verity must use all the wit and courage they possess to expose a deadly murderer who will stop at nothing to achieve their aim...

The speed of Narration but not in a good way
The narrator really needs to learn to slow down her speech. It is fine if there is an urgency, but she was going full pelt from the start. It detracted from the story and made it far less enjoyable.

Murder, Mystery and Moaning !
Very enjoyable murder mystery set in a country house. The story is told mainly through the eyes and opinions of one of the two sleuting friends.
There is a great cast of characters
That said, I didn't take to one of the sleuths. Miss Hart has a huge chip on her shoulder about her station in life. She moans constantly.
Also, I thought that the narrator spoke too fast, with hardly any change in intonation.
But maybe the dullness of the tone and narration was deliberate in that it reflected how dull Miss Hart appeared to find her life. ?

5/10
Was read so fast and didn’t sound right when I slowed it down. Mostly in a monotone with not many breaths.
Would have been a much better listen with a different narrater as couldn’t settle into it like I usually do.

Enjoyable cozy murder, set in the English countryside in 1930s
I downloaded this book just before a long car drive and it was the perfect companion during my trip.
I am a fan of the “Cozy murder” genre, especially if set in a stately home in the English countryside, and featuring upstairs downstairs characters.
The plot is engaging, and the two girls are easy to love, in fact, I’m looking forward to the next book.
I disagree with other reviewers who did not like the reader, for me she did a great job, I’m not a native English speaker, but I had no trouble whatsoever to follow her narration.

Detailed Story
Good murder mystery. Very detailed with high level of English grammar used. Might be too detailed for some. Describes the era that the story is set in very well.

Fantastic
I have heard another audiobook with a very similar plot to this one, but this book is better! It’s very well-written with enjoyable characters, and an exciting story. The narration is excellent too. I will definitely be watching for more books by this author.
