Summary
The Christmas trees in Knightsbridge sparkle with festive joy, and there’s nothing more fun than Christmas cocktail parties to ring in the new year of 1922. Camille Divine, known as Lady Camille Divine, has decorated her little house in Birdcage Mews with glistening decorations and a beautiful Christmas tree, but she has more on her mind than the festive season.
Lady Phoebe Carruthers has begged Camille and her maid, Cecily, to investigate the disappearance of her personal maid. Then women begin to disappear off the street, their bodies left under the Christmas trees that stand in front of London's most popular landmarks. Something links the women who have been murdered and Phoebe's maid, and Camille is determined to find out what the connection is before another woman is murdered.
She realizes there is safety in numbers and that she can do so much more with a team of resolute women by her side, so she recruits some of our old friends, Carrie, Elsie, Dorothy, and Ida, to help her discover what happened to Phoebe's maid, and why so many women are being murdered in such a brutal way.
A novel in the 99 Nightingale Lane Publishing series.

Couldn't get beyond the first couple of chapters
There's a confusing start, talking about a murder which isn't actually the subject of this book. The author refers to characters from this other murder without clear explanation of who they are. Ironically, we are then told at least three times that the father of a character in this book is the "previous Lord Devine". This was author description, not dialogue to establish a character type. It's overwritten, with unnecessary adjectives and superfluous "he said", "she answered" where it's quite clear who's talking without them. It would have benefited from a thorough editing and proofreading. The clumsy sentence structures which might go unnoticed on a page are all too apparent when read aloud. There's an arch style to the writing, increased by the narration. I am afraid I couldn't get on with either. I will return this for a refund. The first time I have ever done such a thing but I really can't continue.

Outstanding!
Brilliantly written, the story flows beautifully and is reflected in the narration. Accurate depiction of the times in which it is set, good integration of historical fact and cultural trends and strong character development. Looking forward to listening to the rest of the series!!

Weak plot
Confusing plot. There are actually two of them. The first is solved almost immediately. The second is "oh, by the way."
Most troubling is the narration. I had to slow down the speed because words kept running into each other. The narrator also sounded like she was mumbling on occasion. I gave up and switched to reading, but I won't read another in the series.
