Summary
The fourth in the Sunday Times bestselling Jane Tennison thrillers, MURDER MILE is set in 1979 at the height of the 'Winter of Discontent' when economic chaos has led to widespread strikes across Britain.
Jane Tennison, now a Detective Sergeant, has been posted to Peckham CID, one of London's toughest areas. As the rubbish on the streets begins to pile up, so does the murder count: two bodies in as many days.
There are no suspects and the manner of death is different in each case. The only link between the two victims is the location of the bodies, found within a short distance of each other near Rye Lane in Peckham. Three days later another murder occurs in the same area. Press headlines scream that a serial killer is loose on 'Murder Mile' and that police incompetence is hampering the investigation.
Jane is under immense pressure to catch the killer before they strike again. Working long hours with little sleep, what she uncovers leaves her doubting her own mind.
Narrated by Anna-Louise Plowman (Holby City, Black Sails and Stargate SG1).

Superb
I forgot just how good Lynda Is Plants is. Evan though forensics and communication has come along way since the book was set, the story telling and characters and plot are so good that those details don't matter, in fact they add to the frustration of not solving the crimes more quickly.
I don't know if LLP wrote with Helen Mirren in mind but, Helen Mirren IS Jane Tennison following her portrayal for tv of the detective. The narrator of this book picked the traits displayed by Mirren beautifully and I felt as though I was watching rather than listening!
Still makes me fume that Tennison was disrespected by her colleagues so frequently purely on her gender! I sincerely hope things are very different now.

Murder mile a grisly mile indeed
Although I enjoyed this book I found it very grissly to read but nevertheless I finished it. I did enjoy the story ,although as others have mentioned the accents were very bad for some of the characters.

Mixed bag
I think this book suffers from the huge success and increasing sophistication of the murder mysteries published and filmed since it was written. Linda La Plante is a brilliant writer of plot and character, but the audience has moved on in every way from this book's world, so it feels very dated and awkward, like an embarrassingly racist and homophobic older relative at a party. As a consequence, the 'mystery' has pretty much evaporated, and the characters are more like caricatures and grotesques. Unfortunately, the outdated themes/characterisation/phraseology is definitely not made better by the narrator, whose 'accents' are so bad that they are heading towards being actually offensive - the Scottish accent is excruciating, and the Jamaican accent is much closer to Irish, bizarrely. The RP-to-Estuary (via-stage-Cockney) range is less grating, which is good because that accounts for the bulk of the narration. The narrator/producer really should have let other actors do those voice parts!

Enjoyed this
Really dated when it comes to homosexuality but represented the times accurately. Boggles the mind that this was only 40 years ago.
Narration very good (unless you’re Scottish or Jamaican!). Worth a free listen.

I liked it but tbh, it was more of a 3.75 than a 4!
It was an ok story, but all the characters were always snapping at each other! If they’d been my friends or colleagues, I’d have been having words about conduct lol! I kept thinking there was going to be a further twist because the story was given out so easily, but there wasn’t. Enjoyable enough but I’ll prob forget about the story by next week!

Excellent story shame about the narration
The story was excellent but the accents of the narrator for the other characters such as the Jamaican and Scottish accents were jarring. If you can get past that all well read.

Brilliant but WOW at the accents!
A great story as you'd expect. The narration is really good except for attempts at accents. A Scottish and, far worse, a Jamaican character come out very badly!
