Summary
From acclaimed author Tracy Clark comes a page-turning mystery featuring hard-boiled Chicago detective Harriet Foster, who’s on the hunt for a serial killer with a deadly affinity for redheads.
When a young red-haired woman is found brutally murdered in downtown Chicago, one detail stands out: the red lipstick encircling her wrists and ankles.
Detective Harriet Foster is on the case, even though she’s still grieving the sudden death of her partner. As a Black woman in a male-dominated department, Foster anticipates a rocky road ahead acclimating to a new team—and building trust with her new partner isn’t coming easily.
After another victim turns up with the same lipstick markings, Foster suspects she’s looking for a serial killer. Through a tip from a psychiatrist, Foster learns about Bodie Morgan: a troubled man with a twisted past and a penchant for pretty young redheads with the bluest eyes. As Foster wades into Morgan’s sinister history, the killer continues their gruesome assault on Chicago’s streets.
In her desperate race to catch the murderer before they strike again, Foster will have to confront the darkest of secrets—including her own.
Critic reviews
“A Chicago cop still mourning her late partner transfers to a new precinct just in time to catch a truly creepy case. Solid…work from a writer who knows the dark side of the Windy City.” —Kirkus Reviews
“[Det. Harriet] Foster’s dogged approach to catching killers will resonate with Michael Connelly fans. May the wait for the second Harriet Foster police procedural be brief.”—Publishers Weekly
“Hide is an astonishing crime novel that broke my heart and then sewed it back together again, stronger than before. It hits all the right notes—a captivating protagonist up against a nightmarish serial killer, their hunt played out across a Chicago so immersive, so flawlessly rendered, that you can hear your own footsteps slapping the streets—while managing to create something completely unique. One of the best books I’ve read in years.”—Jess Lourey, Amazon Charts bestselling author

Weak Everything
Stereotypes become weary very, very quickly. Almost all the women have minimal faults where the misandrist plot paints almost all the men as bafoons and prejudiced. Not sure what made me choose this

Good murder mystery
I received the audible version of this book. Narration was very good. The book could definitely have been shorter in length. I would definitely read another story by this author.

Curious what will happen, but can't tolerate the narrator
She does have a lovely voice, and sometimes it falls into place. But 99% of the time her articulation is robotic ("a" should be pronounced "uh" not "ay") and the word emphasis choices are all wrong. It almost feels as though she doesn't understand the language. It's too bad, because it's a pretty voice (though some character voices are painfully weird) and I'd love to see how the story ends.
