Summary

A sweeping family drama of old secrets and new beginnings…

Even happy families have their secrets…

Anchor House is the coastal home where Naomi and her husband raised their two girls. Now widowed, Naomi is building a new life alone, but the arrival of Ellis next door is bringing some long-awaited fun back too.

Naomi’s daughters are very different: Martha is determined and driven like her father, while Willow is a free spirit. The three women have always been close, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have secrets of their own. There are things Naomi has kept from her girls, like the fact that her marriage to their father wasn’t quite what it seemed…

The Sunday Times bestselling author Erica James returns with this gloriously compelling tale of mothers and daughters, secrets and love.

A different Erica James

I’ve read all of Erica James books, this somehow felt like a different version of her. Nonetheless, once again a great book, well written and with many characters that you’ve met in life.
The only disappointment was that it ended, I loved it.

All loose end tied up quickly

Juliette Stevenson’s narration was superb- I did find Willow’s voice a bit irritating but I suspect I would find her a bit irritating if I actually met her.
Interesting story, mostly likeable characters- after several hours of build up it just finished neatly and tidily a bit too quickly.

Predictable & Just Ok

The narration was good apart from the voice of Willow which was incredibly annoying; Whiny and pathetic - it was a predictable story without much depth but it kept my mind of the stress I’m in right now so I persevered.

Narrator the best ever

This is my first novel by Erica James. I wanted to talk about it as I noticed some bad reviews of the narrator. I bought it BECAUSE it was read out by Juliet Stevenson. I love her voice and any story she narrates would be made better in my opinion. The story was fine, quite slow but that’s ok, the whole point of an audiobook is to listen to it while occupied with something else. I was painting in the garden and had a blissful time, thank you.

Superb performance. Warm and engaging story

Juliet Stephenson read this book wonderfully. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, relatively gentle but with enough grit and plot line to draw you in. Well drawn characters and a very evocative setting.

Erica James at her very best.

I can give no greater praise of Mothers and Daughters than to say how sad I feel to have finished the story. Erica James has woven a wonderfully simple story of a widowed mother and her two adult daughters into a true family saga with all its ups and downs, set in the beautiful setting of a West Sussex village by the sea and I could have gone on reading for many more chapters.
