Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Get ready to meet Rebekah.

Sunday Times best-selling author Tim Weaver is back with his first standalone.

Imagine you don't know your own darkest secret. But someone else does - and now they want you dead....

Exhausted single mother Rebekah Murphy leaves her daughters with a friend in the city to accompany her brother on a work assignment on a picturesque island. An hour after arriving, her and her brother are attacked.

He vanishes, she's left for dead and, by the time she makes it back to safety, it's already too late: the island has closed for the season - and it'll be seven months before anyone returns.

But even with her brother missing, even with no boats, phones or people, Rebekah will soon realise that finding a way back to the mainland is only the start of her nightmare.

Because someone is waiting for her - and they don't want her to make it home alive.

Not what I was expecting.

After having this book on pre-order forever, I was dismayed to see that the usual main narrator Joe Coen had been usurped. I spent the first 30 minutes waiting for Raker to appear. I thought this was unusual and more than a bit odd. In preparation for this book I binge read all the previous books in the Raker series. Finally the penny dropped and I realised that this was a stand-alone book. I was still disappointed - no Raker. Added to that, the scratchy male narrator just didn’t sit right for me. Having said that, (American narrator aside), I restarted the book and enjoyed it very much. I found it to have all the drama, attention to detail, and interesting characters, I have come to expect from this author. I would not hesitate to read more stand-alone books by Tim Weaver.

Missing Pieces

I was a tad disappointed that this was a standalone novel and not a David Raker mystery. Oh well. The book centres around British-born surgeon Dr Rebekah Murphy who finds herself stranded on a deseted island off of the coast of Long Island without her brother Johnny. The background is filled in as the book does along.

It was a long read and I got confused by the male narrator's different characters. There were certain plot points which made no sense. It was OK, but not one of his best.

Indira Varma was a great narrator.

Another masterpiece by Mr Weaver!

A great story with lots of very well placed twists and turns. Loved the subtle nod to a certain other, well known character. Thank you Tim

Boring, lacklustre with dull characters.

Usually like Tim Weaver books, but this was just so boring. The characters were dull and it was difficult to empathise with any of them. Far too long and boring.

Rubik’s cube of a story, gripping.

Well crafted, intricate storyline, although it took me a while to understand what was going on - the author deliberately unpeels a bit at a time to keep you guessing - almost didn’t keep me listening a couple of times, especially as he is clearly thumbing a snub to his UK fans in favour of the more lucrative US audience. But I’m glad I persisted, because it got gripping in the second part. Loved his detective. (Not Raker, who only appears in a Hitchcock-style cameo, maybe indicating things to come). Beautifully read. Thank you!

Family complications.

A very long and mysterious book. It takes a lot of concentration but also a book you don’t want to put down.

Definitely missing pieces!

Took a while to get into as trying to piece the initial storyline together was frustrating and bitty....

As always once I got a grip it was engrossing and captivating.

Absorbing listen!

This is the first audiobook I’ve bought in AGES that lived up to and beyond expectation. No melodrama, tight plotting, and a very slow reveal.

Narrator was perfect. Will look for this pairing of author/narrator again.

More, please!
