Summary

At the edge of the world, unknown and unseen, he endures and survives even in our digital era....

A young man leaves his backdoor Russian town and heads to Moscow, never to be poor again. With each day, he grows more and more desperate, until he meets an old geologist with an intriguing and surprisingly profitable offer: to join him on his trip to the depths of Siberia, the largest forest on the planet, and become a "black digger" - one of those who find and excavate mammoth tusks with the purpose of selling them as ivory to the highest bidder.

With nothing much to lose, our hero agrees, venturing to the edge of the Earth, beyond the borders of civilization and into the untouched wilderness. There, thousands of miles from home, in a race against the clock before the cold seals the ground, he has to face nature, other diggers, his inner demons, and, most importantly, the enigmatic "Master of the Forest" - a prehistoric creature and the origin of all local legends, who ferociously protects his domain.

Really good time

Somewhat of a slow burn, don't come to this if you are wanting none stop actions. What this story does really well is the atmosphere. I can see myself listening to this again and that is the highest praise I can give it.

Excellent story and narration

Loved this. Tight story and likeable characters and unique, enjoyable narration. Not too gory, just enough to serve the story! Will probably re visit this tale again!

Decent story, but poor narration

Story of a man who seeks his fortune digging up mammoth tusks in Siberia, gets stalked by angry bigfoot (or Almasty I suppose given it's in Russia, although the word is never mentioned).

There's a good story here; the characters are developed more than usual horror movie cast, with some interesting ersonal conflict. And while its a slow burn, when the horror starts, the scenes are interesting.

However the narration let's it down. When doing spoken dialogue the narrator is ok, but during the narrative he's so monotone - even during scenes horror. I looked up what else he's narrated and I see a lot of non-fiction - and for that I think he'd be fine, but reading bigfoot attack scene the same way you would a historical text book just removes a lot of the tension the author has worked to put in.

Still, I wasn't so off putting I quit and decided to read it instead which has been case with some other audio books I've encountered.

Overall, incredible but...

The story was very entertaining and well written. I just wish the narrator showed the right emotion as sometimes it felt like he was raising his voice when it wasn't necessary and a more calm tone would have felt more immersive. But regardless of that it was a very good story.

Wow

This made me SO uncomfortable... thanks :D
At several points I found myself grimacing... shivering a bit. Great descriptions.

Highly recommend listening during a night walk, haha.
