Summary

It happened so fast, it spread through the world like wildfire. It was impossible to control and almost impossible to fight....

Ten years has passed since an infectious virus nearly consumed all of mankind. Millions died, millions more became infected, changed, and turned into mindless, feral hunters bent on the consumption of living flesh.

Archer was a solitary man, scavenging what he could to survive off the ruins of the world that no longer existed. A world gone mad, where those who still lived were just as great of threat as those who were infected.

Without knowing it, he finds himself in possession of a map that leads to a hidden sanctuary with the possible means to stop it all. All he has to do is get her there alive....

One of my top books

This book was brilliant. So well written. It’s not just about the undead it’s about survival against other threats. The narrator was excellent and brought the book to life. I recommend it highly!

Wow

A brilliant book that will take you on a journey into the unknown with an unlikely hero and his aim to deliver a child to safety. A hero who in my mind I envisioned to be like Hugh Jackman in Van Helsing. I was transported to the world inhabited by Archer and Auska and the cannibals and the residents of Sanctuary. A dystopian novel that will enrich those of you who enjoy such delights as The Walking Dead.

Well written and relentless

I've read/listened to countless post apocalyptic/zombie novels and there's little new that can be brought to such a well trodden genre. What sets Fuller's novel apart from others is that he is an exceptionally gifted author who can actually write. Nothing is superfluous in his work and it shines through in What Remains. Pohlman's narration throughout is crystal clear and engaging. The fact I completed the novel in one sitting is a good indicator as to how engrossing this novel is. I'll certainly be listening to book 2

Gritty post-apocalyptic tale of survival

To me the story feels like a blend of the Walking Dead and Mad Max, in which a hardened and solitary survivor reluctantly takes a child under his protection and overcomes his selfishness and cynical hopelessness to accomplish something greater than himself. He’s no hero, and has no ambitions of accomplishing anything heroic, but he has to make choices. By making these choices, he discovers that he still cares about certain things, and allows someone else to hold on to their hope. That in itself makes him a bit of a hero in the end, in a world full of bad people.

Listening to this audiobook was a treat, the narrator did an excellent job, and managed to create very distinct voices for each character.

Excellent! Like "Book of Eli" meets "I Am Legend"

Vivid imagery instantly drops you into a post-apocalyptic world. The exploration of human capacities for cruelty, and compassion are realistic and insightful. Excited for book 2!

Great addition to the genre.

This is a great example of character driven, post apocalyptic fiction. This is a genre I know well and it's tough to bring new ideas but this story had a couple of quality surprises.

I'm new to this narrator but he's on my list now. It's a good list 😉

Gripping!

I loved this book, I was hooked from the start and was hanging on every word. A fast paced, action packed read, with shocking plot twists, and memorable characters, Archer's being unforgettable! Timothy pohlman's narration was fantastic and really brought the characters to life. I received this book in exchange for my honest review.

Good writing, excellent anti-hero, but for 1 thing

I enjoyed most of this book. It's well-written and Mr. Fuller has created a believable but very bleak world. Archer makes for a seriously cynical anti-hero. When he runs into a little girl in trouble, Auska, she melts his heart enough that he takes care of her. All of that is well-done and the love Archer develops for Auska is heart-warming. Except, and this is big for me, when Archer tries to teach Auska how to protect herself in a heartless world, he beats her, and that, to me, is a deal-breaker. We have far too many men beating women in this world. The last thing we need to do is glorify it or think of it as a necessity because the world is harsh. If it weren't for that, I would give the book five stars.

Greatness all the way

From start to finish, I enjoyed my journey through this well-written and well-narrated story.
It was dark, gritty, violent, quick-paced, emotional, and downright entertaining without a moment of boredom.
I’m glad I have the second book of the series downloaded as I could not imagine having to wait for it.
James Fuller has gained himself yet another fan.

WOW! Just WOW!

OMG! What will I do now! I know, read book two! This is NOT my usual genre, but I took a chance and I am so thrilled I did. The author did a fantastic job creating this world in the future, the danger of it and all it's craziness. The characters are so real and raw. You sink your teeth in and don't want to let go. There is danger lurking around every corner, you can't trust anyone and everyone wants to kill you. Yet some alliances are formed our of necessity and that in itself can be dangerous. Archer, a man who has survived alone and wants no partners, is suddenly tasked with the care of a young girl named Auska, who's family was killed. She has a very important mission to complete, and even though he doesn't like it, he now helps her. They encounter so much. Things I can't comprehend how they survived yet the do and keep on moving forward. Until one of them makes the ultimate sacrifice for the other, just so the mission can be carried out. I was on the edge of my seat, biting nails and wanting for bad for them to both make the journey. I can't wait to see what book 2 holds in store. I listened to the audio version of this book and the narrator did a FANTASTIC job. He really did well with the different characters and the story telling overall.

WHAT REMAINS - EXCELLENT

What Remains by James Fuller is the first book in a duet. It is a dark and gritty tale of survival in a post-apocalyptic world. It’s been ten years and resources are scarce and those who live in this new world have to be as brutal as those around them. Our protagonist, Archer, is a loner, hard, strong, clever and an experienced fighter who distrusts others and looks out for himself alone. When a young girl named Auska is orphaned, she follows Archer hoping for his help and protection to complete her mission and reach an area called Sanctuary. But Archer’s cold response at first shows how hard he’s become. He finally allows her to travel with him providing she keeps up. He dumps her in a town, but ends up saving her, showing he still has some compassion. He tries to toughen her up and in the process finds himself reluctantly caring for her.

This is such a well-written story with great pacing and plenty of action that keeps the reader on edge and completely engaged. There is constant danger from all sides—infected zombies, cannibals, and brutal factions who would kill in a heartbeat. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would highly recommend it.

The narrator was perfect for this story—very versatile and enhanced the performance. His different voices for the characters were spot on!
