Summary
What to do when you feel like giving up
When you said, “I do”, you entered marriage with high hopes, dreaming it would be supremely happy. You never intended for it to be miserable.
Millions of couples are struggling in desperate marriages. But the story doesn’t have to end there. Dr. Gary Chapman writes, “I believe that in every troubled marriage, one or both partners can take positive steps that have the potential for changing the emotional climate in their marriage.”
Loving Your Spouse When You Feel Like Walking Away, the revised and updated edition of the award-winning Desparate Marriages, teaches you how to:
- Recognize and reject the myths that hold you captive
- Better understand your spouse’s behavior
- Take responsibility for your own thoughts, feelings, and actions
- Make choices that can have a lasting, positive impact on you and your spouse
An experienced marriage and family counselor, Gary Chapman speaks to those whose spouse is any of the following:
- Irresponsible
- A workaholic
- Controlling
- Uncommunicative
- Verbally abusive
- Physically abusive
- Sexually abusive
- Unfaithful
- Addicted to alcohol or drugs
- Depressed
Marriage has the same potential to be miserable as it does to be blissful. Listen to Loving Your Spouse When You Feel Like Walking Away to learn how you can turn things around.

It made me stop and really think
My husband and I have been struggling and I just want to say thank you Dr Chapman for calling me out. I needed this wake up call. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I've shared the book with my husband in hopes he will also find value in your words.

Not a book for Practical help for personal growth
I had seen that there was a Christian aspect to this book and it didn't put me off but it felt like all of the "case studies" miraculously fixed years of marriage problems without explanation of how deep rooted personal growth occurred. The book in short says be a good partner, don't expect your partner to change but being this God filled person they will automatically be better given enough time. The only divorce cited in the book was when a husband wouldn't stop using adult content outside of the marriage but the husband who abused his daughters and the people hitting and assaulting their partners are not said to have divorced.
That aside the book offers no practical tips to help you accept how as two young people with aspirations and goals you can come back together after a few decades to reconnect when you both now are very different people and perhaps on two very different roads. There is no mention of realignment of goals or reconnecting as who you are now. The reason is hinted at as well you liked each other enough then so you must want to stick with it.
The book is all about you changing and that being enough to make your partner want to change but I question if you do this in a vacuum are you moving to being the person your partner actually wants if they don't get to work through their issues? I can see if your selfish ways are due to thinking I do X and Y and Z I'm taking A for myself if this is taken away would you not end up more miserable.

closed minded
unfortunately this book is very closed minded and promotes Love only as the old school manifesto, not what it is these days. disappointing

encouragement through another chance
I am trying to give my husband, who has declared himself an alcoholic and who has a history of emotional abuse, another chance. This book has been so encouraging and comforting to me. It is full of relevant, applicable stories and situations. It contains helpful suggestions and some concrete advice. I am not religious at all, but the references to God (and the few references to religious doctrines) in this book do not offend me or bother me at all. I almost didn't buy this book Because I had read it was too religious. But I found that I was able to interpret those parts in a way that suit me personally, and still got so much out of the book.

NO MENTION OF RELIGION IN DETAILS!
This book is not what it seems. I tend to keep my personal beliefs to myself, and if you like religion to be a foundation in your marriage, that's awesome. That said, the information on this page does NOT mention that this is a Christian related book. I don't need to ask 'god' for marriage advice, when it is not part of my marriage, nor my life. This book is so misleading, and it's downright criminal that Audibile lets it slide that there is no mention of religion in a marital help book.

Great Read
Practical, straight forward advice on how best to love someone when they aren’t making it easy. This book helped give me some hope for change on what I can do instead of sitting in my head. Get this book if you are struggling.

A must read
Listening to this book was indeed difficult and took months to finally make myself read it! First time I was not having this book thinking I know what I want and I'm just done!! Second time was even harder harder because it hit close to home, a little more than I wanted. Was emotional through the first few chapters. Might want to have your journal and Bible handy and serious prayer time. After that, I stepped away from this book and let go and let God! I have been in a lot of trials and tribulations, this book has given me information I should of had when I knew the issues started. I will again read and take more notes and just apply where needed as I heal and make this work for my marriage. Happy reading!!

Superficial, but Sparks Good Conversation
Primarily opinion and experience based, with little research to back it up. Typical of Gary Chapman, but when discussing "desperate marriages" I would have liked better therapeutic approaches and practical solutions to offer clients. Not a very meaty book, but good for sparking conversations.
