Summary

From the author of TikTok sensations and global bestsellers The Love Hypothesis and Love on the Brain.

Rival physicists collide in a vortex of academic feuds and fake dating shenanigans in this delightfully STEMinist romcom.

The many lives of theoretical physicist Elsie Hannaway have finally caught up with her. By day, she's an adjunct professor, toiling away at grading labs and teaching thermodynamics in the hopes of landing tenure. By other day, Elsie makes up for her non-existent paycheck by offering her services as a fake girlfriend, tapping into her expertly honed people-pleasing skills to embody whichever version of herself the client needs.

Honestly, it's a pretty sweet gig - until her carefully constructed Elsie-verse comes crashing down. Because Jack Smith, the annoyingly attractive and arrogant older brother of her favourite client, turns out to be the cold-hearted experimental physicist who ruined her mentor's career and undermined the reputation of theorists everywhere. And he's the same Jack Smith who rules over the physics department at MIT, standing right between Elsie and her dream job.

Elsie is prepared for an all-out war of scholarly sabotage but...those long, penetrating looks? Not having to be anything other than her true self when she's with him? Will falling into an experimentalist's orbit finally tempt her to put her most guarded theories on love into practice?

Critic reviews

"Ali Hazelwood proves that science is sexy as hell, and that love can 'STEM' from the most unlikely places. She's my newest must-buy author." (Jodi Picoult)

Unpopular Opinion and Disappointing

This might be an unpopular opinion but I found this to be disappointing. I really loved Love On The Brain and The Love Hypothesis, so was really disappointed when I didn't enjoy this book. Also, I ended up skimming huge chunks of this book, despite it starting off strong in the first 2 chapters.

Great quality

As I expected, Ali Hazelwood never lets me down. instead..she ruined me for all the others... her books are so good, readable and enjoyable. the narrator is superb.. I can't wait for the next one in November.

Great geeky romance

Really enjoyed listening to this book, went in not knowing much about the author but so happy it was on a deal as it was brilliant! Never knew physics could be so hot!!

Brilliant

One of the best stories ever Ali is by far my favourite author as you can listen to her books over and over and never get bored.

Strangely very enjoyable

Thought this was going to be the same old stuff but the academic backdrop was actually a bit different and very enjoyable.

Easy listening

Exactly what you expect. Male love interest very similar to the last 2 of her books I've listened to and I spent the whole story thinking the protagonist doesn't need a man, she needs a therapist. So the epilogue was refreshing. It's fun, funny and easy to listen to, but the trope was a bit too absurd.

Slow

Just didn’t hold my attention. Slow and uninteresting. The reviews were good so quite disappointed really.

Lighthearted fun

and you know how it’s going to finish but enjoyable nonetheless. Who’s never in the mood for a bit of romance and a few laughs.

very cute

what can I say? I am a sucker for Ali's books. they are very rom-com-y and I love that about them. I must say though, I rolled my eyes a little too hard and the "he's so much bigger than me" trope used AGAIN, and it has been my least favourite of her books thus far, but I still enjoyed the tooth rotting sweetness of it. And I kanida wish more men were like the ones Ali writes about, because hot damn... but that's all from my side.

not for me

she is a brilliant theoretical physicist and…she is making money as a fake girlfriend…while she cares deeply about her work and eventually finds real love. this is one of the most ridiculous love novels i have ever come across. i can't say i liked the premise. not for me.
