Summary

With the looming threat of death now hanging over his head, Roy makes the difficult decision to leave the crater. Unfortunately for him, leaving won’t solve his problems, especially those stemming from within.

With Aika captured, Roy finds himself banished to the Wilds, once again powerless against the forces of Buryoku.

Powerful forces are gathering, and he’ll have to make his choice quickly. Buryoku is not kind to the weak, and Roy knows that better than anyone. Will he rise up to reclaim what was once his, or will he fall prey to his innermost demons and fade into obscurity?

I listen to pretty much everything Aaron Oster writes. The quality of his books is pretty consistent so if you like one of his books, you'll probably like them all.

Strong sequel that nicely expands scope of series

While you could jump into this series with this book as it is entertaining enough in it's own right, I would recommend reading or listening to the first one if you haven't already as it is an enjoyable book and you will appreciate this book in the series that much more due to a stronger connection to the characters.

This instalment strikes a good balance between the main character's progression and not falling into a trap of him getting things too easily without setbacks and by getting that balance right, the author increases our engagement with the characters, you are willing him to succeed rather than simply expecting him to do so.

The narration works well with this book, helping to enhance the listener's enjoyment of the book overall and ensuring that the characters are suitably distinctive in tone too.

Overall, an enjoyable listen that makes me look forward to subsequent books in the series even more.
