Summary

Someone has a secret. A secret worth killing for....

When a series of suicides, linked to the Wellness Spirit Centre, turn out to be murder, it brings together DCI Whitney Walker and forensic psychologist Dr Georgina Cavendish for another investigation. But as they delve deeper, they come across a tangle of secrets and the very real risk that the killer will strike again.

As the clock ticks down, the only way forward is to infiltrate the centre. But the outcome is disastrous, in more ways than one.

For fans of Angela Marsons, Rachel Abbott and M A Comley, Lethal Secret is the fourth book in the Cavendish & Walker crime fiction series.

Includes a special bonus note from the author.

Critic reviews

"Narrator Clare Corbett flawlessly creates the accents and setting of Lenchester, England, while introducing Detective Chief Inspector Whitney Walker and her polar opposite, psychologist Georgina Cavendish.... Corbett's best creation is pathologist Clare Dexter whose eccentricities add a bit of levity. The well-rendered step-by-step procedural, with its gripping conclusion, makes for an exceptional listen." (AudioFile Magazine, review of Cavendish & Walker)

repetitive

Loving the series but getting annoyed with repetitive sentences, like how 'Cavendish misses social cues' every time Walker cracks a joke.

excellent series and narrative

I thought series of books would be hard to keep interest of reader/listener but this series is quite addictive, same characters but great stories, narrator is excellent at voices and accents, I forget its only one person, also you can start to picture the looks of the characters. can't recommend this series enough, which I only started first in the INCLUDED category.

Not sure about this one

Story/plot are pretty good but the dialogue is not great. Some of the lines are so hokey and unbelievable. All the characters have exactly the same pattern of speech, it gets eye rolling towards the end. Ending is very abrupt.

Another Fantastic and gripping listen

I can't praise this whole series enough. I have listened to the prequel and the first 4 books in the series back to back and have loved them all. I particularly enjoyed this one as I love anything which involves a cult and how they recruit new members. The story was gripping from start to finish and as always Clare Corbett's narration was superb.

Very Disappointing

I don't know how I managed to reach the end of this book. Maybe I was hoping it would improve. It didn't.
The constant repetition of "He said, she said, Whitney said, Claire said", etc. was very irritating. Worst of all, the plummy, upper-class voices of Georgina made them both sound so arrogant, abrupt and unfriendly.
Many of the characters were so 2-dimensional and were just not thought through. The friendship between Whitney and Georgina was so strange as they were so dissimilar. Also, I was amazed that Whitney was so accepting of Claire's, the pathologist, rudeness. This seemed so unrealistic.
Below are a couple of examples of incidents that just wouldn't happen in reality.
In chapter 7, the reaction of the murdered girl's parents was unrealistic. They were not shocked, nor did they show any surprise when they were told by the police that their daughter had committed suicide but instead had been murdered. They asked no questions and showed no reaction to Whitney's instruction that they would have to postpone their daughter's funeral scheduled for a few days' time.
In chapter 13, it was implausible that when the police went to the Wellness Centre for the first time, the owner failed to question why they were there. Surely that would be the first question someone would ask in that situation.
SPOILER ALERT.
Finally, the story seemed unfinished. Craig's involvement was not concluded, such as where the Rohypnol came from. Did Craig supply the drug? Maybe this is covered in the next book in the series but unfortunately I'm not tempted to read any more of them and I'm sorry but I will be avoiding any read by this narrator in the future.

Basic storyline badly narrated

Basic and uninteresting story with 2 dimensional characters that I just couldn’t warm to. Narrator was either all shades of Brummy or ridiculously posh. Rubbish!

Cavendish and Walker: A welcome “audiction”

I attempted to listen to Book 3, “Death Track.” Unfortunately, there were audio problems in starting this book (I will try again). I then began Book 4, “Lethal Secret.” Once again, Cavendish and Walker work well together during an intense search for another serial killer. Two very different women, it is interesting to listen to their comical banter as they form a quirky and endearing bond. Again, I was thrilled to get this one in the Audible Plus section for no charge. Clare Corbett has become a new favorite narrator. Sally Rigby pens an intensely suspenseful and exhilarating novel. I will be checking for more from this literary duo. The audiobooks in this series is definitely worth credits or cash purchase. I do not use credits for lower priced books. Kudos to Rigby and Corbett, as well as an awesome thank you to Audible! Highly recommended and I look forward to more adventures from Cavendish and Walker.
NOTE: Author Rigby speaks at the end of this book. She explains more of the ending of Book 1, “Deadly Games.”

Whitney and George

I really enjoy Whitney and George’s witty relationship. This story was a good read but, not as good as the first two books. The ending felt rushed and a little too simple.

Great pacing and interesting premise

From start to finish, there was “nothing not to like” in this mystery. It’s always a bonus to learn something new to explore, in this case cults.

Good setting, weaker motivation for murder

There was a lot I enjoyed about this book. The wellness group/cult was wonderfully detailed and portrayed. That slippery slope of those unsatisfied with their lives seeking a fulfilling, spiritual path then crossing into being brainwashed and used. I appreciated the lives of each of the victims and what led them to attend the wellness programs. Sending Dr. George undercover was another fascinating element, and showed a lot about her. But when the murderer was uncovered and the reason revealed I found it underwhelming. Maybe was how easily he confessed once cornered, but it just seemed to wind down with a whimper.

I am loving the brief words from the author. She seems delightful and I love the generosity of her describing her life and her favorite musicals and tv shows.

Complex Plot & Good Narration

We have the 4th book in this series, with a complex crime to figure out. Why three girls after being at a wellness yoga retreat hang themselves. Whitney and George. As they delve into this and find out what was really going on at this place.Giving us a tense filled plot and to stop before more lives are taken. The author gives us a nice flowing plot and keeps one interest to the end. Good Series
Enjoyed the narrator, which added to the tense feeling of the story.

Clare Corbett has got to be the most creative, diverse and all encompassing narrator out there. Her range in voice diversity both male and female provide complexity to the characters. Smashing job

really good who done it

Salt Rigby is great at writing these who done it mysteries. I didn't guess this one although when I found out I felt silly for not figuring it out. you get to know these characters and l almost feel close to them. I hope I can finish the series sometime.
