Not bad, but didn't grip me

I tried this as I've seen it recommended on Booktok several times in the romantacy genre. While I get that it may work for some, it just didn't grip me. It all felt a bit too stretched out and main character didn't have enough agency for me. I finished it, but I don't care enough to read the next one. The narration was fine, but not great.

wanted to quite halfway

it started quite good, gave one the impression of an independant strong female lead.. but reached a point where the protaganist just became infuriatingly apathetic, emotionally unstable and just unlikeable tbh.

all and all, if you like trauma-prn, half a book of mental breakdowns while diffrent kind of guys trying to Calm the person over and over and over again - than this is the book for you.

if you don't like that sort of thing and would prefer a strong female lead that don't need constant saving and calming, then I'd recommend something else.

TOG and ACOTAR waste of a credit

A water downed Aelin from TOG and Rhys from ACOTAR. lots of parallels from both stories. I know it's hard to be 100% original now a days with so many fantasy books out, but it just seems too close to be not a fanfic of Aelin and Rhys. It's not a bad book at all, just not what I was expecting after reading other reviews.

FMC is very whiny, bratty, and dense

SPOILER

On top of all that, the major conflict is not a conflict at all. She avoided the topic of her being Fae, her mother, and all magic. Sorin tried, and she shut him down over and over and over again. Then she's mad at him for not telling her about being Fae, who her mom is, and magic.

She also HATES the fire prince for killing her mom. she we don't even know why she thinks the fire prince killed her mom.

she also can't grasp the fact that she's been taught one side of history and can't accept anything but what she wants to be fact. As long as it doesn't disrupt her views on life.

honestly, I think I'm being generous with 3 stars. Does anyone know if FMC is less pitiful in the rest of the series.

DNF

Couldn’t get through this one. It felt like a bunch of stolen pieces from other stories all jammed together. Not much original thought. Didn’t hold my attention which is why I couldn’t finish it.

Went downhill

I really enjoyed the first half of this book. I actually went and bought the second one because the audiobook for the 2nd isn't out yet and I thought I would be super excited to go into the 2nd book. Just finished the 1st and I don't plan on reading the second anymore. My biggest issue with this book is Scarlett. I found her to be so iritating and obtuse, and it just gets worse as the book progresses.

Female lead is too inconsistent

This book was VERY hard to finish. I only managed to finish it while multi tasking, and only did so because I paid for this.

The female lead is at times strong and likable and then she becomes a complete baby with no rhyme nor reason other than to push the story along. This kind of weak writing is so frustrating. By the end of the book I vowed to NEVER pay for another audiobook from this author.

Save Your Money!

I usually don’t leave negative reviews, as I figure my silence is enough. But this book made me mad that I spent a credit on it.

Went downhill quickly

“Who would have thought breaking you would be so easy?” sums it all up. The author spent so much time building her up as the best, stealthiest, deadliest assassin, but she falls apart when put to the test, EVERY TIME. I’m so sick of her falling to her knees and crying. Also how do the best, most skilled assassins keep getting simply caught? Used as leverage by the same person MULTIPLE times. Could have been so good. The main character can’t get out of her own way, she’s deliberately obtuse.

Had room for Potential...

Hmm... I'm giving this book 3 stars overall, & if i could it'd be 2.5 stars but with narration I'm giving it 3, bc this book had room for potential & the general idea of the story and the main character was good, but it didn't keep me roped in all the way bc of how anti climatic events were and how chaotic the characters were in this first book with little to no development. I wish I could have loved Scarlets character a little bit more, but I didn't bc she was the biggest headache out of everyone in this book & I feel like the author just threw in a little bit of everything she wanted for a main female character and didn't keep Scarlets character as consistent as she should have. I loved the idea of scarlet being a strong badass, but the author made her like that only for anticlimactic moments that didnt tie in very well to the story. & I could go on about these little details about scarlet that felt so unreal for her supposed character but I would digress, anyways, like I said has potential, but overall was a bit of a headache just trying to keep up.

Surprising good listen

I’ve ended up with a lot of duds lately when I pick something from newer authors but this was a great surprise. Great story, interesting twist and the narrator was awesome!

Had potential but didn’t live up to it

This could have been so good but it just fell flat. FMC just wasn’t relatable and became wildly irritating. MMC was boring and left quite a bit to be desired. Miscommunication trope was on steroids here and just wasn’t enjoyable. Unfortunately, the writing was subpar as well. We go from using language befitting of the time period to using slang and syntax that’s appropriate for today’s modern world which just throws us out of the story. This came highly recommended and I’m honestly disappointed I didn’t like it. I may have liked it more if I read it myself, I didn’t feel like the narrator added any benefit to this story.
