Summary

Professor Fiona Cameron is a psychologist who uses computer technology to track serial offenders. She vowed never to work for the Met again after they went against her advice and screwed up an investigation as a result.

But when her lover, thriller writer Kit Martin, tells her a fellow crime novelist has been murdered, Fiona can’t help taking an interest. With the killer striking again, Fiona is caught in a race against time.

Critic reviews

"Dark, clever and timely." ( Scotland on Sunday)
"She is the real mistress of psychological gripping thrillers; no-one can plot or tell a story like she can. The hairs on my neck literally stood up." ( Express)

Gripping read, loved it from start to finish

Couldn't stop listening from the very beginning. Great voice for the story and a plot I didn't guess which makes a nice change.

Riveting

As always with Val McDermid's books, I was gripped by the story from start to finish. The characters are well-rounded and display the fine sense of humour I have come to expect from this author. My only small gripe would be that I could have done without some of the all too graphic descriptions of what happened to the victims. It definitely didn't put me off the book though. Fabulous as ever.

Good story

Usual good story, narration let down by a very poor Spanish accent. Sounded more like a Mexican than a Madrileño.

Good story spoilt by awful narration

I think my headline says it all. This was a good story - not Val’s best, but engaging enough to persist despite the dreadful narration. Ridiculous approximations of men’s voices and a strange emphasis where none was necessary. The narration was stilted and stiff with little emotion!. I did reach the end but it was difficult. I will be avoiding any books by this narrator in the future

The worst male accents ever

A bizarre story plot which I could have coped with but Kits accent was just terrible.

Good Story, Good Reader

Wiiiiith a couple of boggles on pronunciation of Scottish things, really surprised that people still get ‘Kirkcaldy’ wrong. Less surprised at the odd emphasis on ‘Moray’ and ‘Lovat’ , and can’t help but feel research would have been better than guessing.

I can forgive the author taking liberties with the geography around Lairg, but did I really hear ‘machair’ above Loch Shin?

I know these are narky things, but they do puncture the immersion.

Rather long!

I always enjoy this author, and I did read this to the end. However I did think it was a bit far fetched, and a bit too long.

Spoiled by the cringy male voices

I couldn't get past the awful put-on voices for the male characters. would have been much better with just a straight read
