Summary

In this thrilling novel from bestselling author John Marrs, a young couple’s house hides terrible secrets—and not all of them are confined to the past.

Mia and Finn are busy turning a derelict house into their dream home when Mia unexpectedly falls pregnant. But just when they think the house is ready, Mia discovers a shocking message scored into a skirting board: I WILL SAVE THEM FROM THE ATTIC. Following the clue up into the eaves, the couple make a gruesome discovery: their home was once a real-life murder house, with the evidence still concealed within the four walls.

In the wake of their traumatic discovery, the baby arrives and Mia can’t shake her fixation with the monstrous crimes that happened right above them. Tormented by the terrible things she saw, she is desperate to dig into the past to find answers.

Secrecy shrouds the mystery of the attic, but when shards of a dark truth start to emerge, Mia realises the danger is terrifyingly present. She is prepared to do anything to protect her family—but will the previous tenants stop her from discovering their secret?

excellent novel

A brilliant, perfectly performed thriller full of twists and turns that keep you gripped till the very end. Loved it so much I completed the book in one sitting and can't wait to start another by John Marr. Think I'll read The One next! 5 out of 5 from me.

Incredibly dark themes and horrible characters

This author really knows how to write truly awful characters. Second book I’ve read by him and I don’t think I’ll read any more. The characters are hateful and infuriating. Nothing redeeming at all about them.
But I don’t deny this story kept me totally hooked because I just needed to know the twists!
But if you are looking for a satisfying ending - this author is not the place to find it!

Very dark and disturbing read

I wanted to love this book after the rave reviews I have heard about it. Well, I definitely didn't love it, but it's one of those books that reels you in and you just want to hear that final twist! Its very disturbing and far fetched in places, but Overall it's worth a listen.
Lady narration is ok, narrator for Finn is very annoying, especially when mimicking Mia!

What on earth have I just listened too!

It's a horrible storyline, child murders and abuse.
Being a mother there is no way, depression or not would I leave my kid with that woman.
it's obvious she's controlling and manipulative and her husband OMG!
After everything the mother learns to be true months later she still allows the father access to her son! WHAT!
No one can be so foolish and naive.
Who would leave their own kid with a family of child murderers, its obvious Finn is the same way, I'm not even married to the character and I recognised the warning bells early on!!
It's totally unbelievable that any mother can be so blatantly stupid!
You can tell its written by a bloke! He must think all woman are dumb!
As for the narration, it took me a while to like, some of them were okay, the narrator doing Finn took a while to like but once you've listened to it a few times it's okay. They can only work with what they have after all.
I doubt I'll be reading anymore by this author, especially as if he portrays women this way.
I don't understand all the positive reviews at all, 3 out of 5 is being generous.

Yikes

This was a rollercoaster of a story. Great narration, great story. My one small criticism is that some of the female characters are unrealistic, it is obviously written by a man. But I loved the book overall and am going to read more by the same author.

I got as far as chapter 12

Not sold on the narration, or any of the characters. The sample drew me in as it seemed well written and was voiced well. However, I didn’t feel the same way about the rest of the narrators.
The storyline is very dark and twisted and left me uncomfortable in places.

Great performance, mediocre story

I got hooked from the first sentences and thought it would stay like this. However, the deeper I got into the story, the more predictable it became. It was not a bad listen, but not as spectacular as I expected, and I don't understand the whole hype around this book.

Another easy and enjoyable listen from John Marrs

I delayed purchasing this due to some mediocre reviews but I really enjoyed the story and concept and had finished it over two days. Will be a hit with fans of John Marrs like me and could easily introduce new listeners to his books.

Oooof

Why is every character so manipulative and unlikable? I couldn’t get into it because the inner dialogue of everyone is so gross and their actions are too un relatable

In my Top 5 of FAV authors

Excellent narration. This was my 3rd book by John Marrs. Just when you think the book could be ending there is always another hr or even 2 to further twist the story. This books was excellent. So so dark. My imagination was reeling. I’ve listened to What Lies Between Us, The Good Samaritan, and now this. I can’t wait to start my next JM book. Such amazing psychological thrillers. Well done, Sir. Chapter 39. Brilliant.

Came highly recommended, but wasn't for me.

Possible Spoilers, CW: Child Death
.
.
.

This book came highly recommended in a facebook group I'm a part of...but unfortunately, I did not have the same experience. I wish I would have been warned about all the deaths/torture of children that happened. I also can't believe how many family members were just complicit in what was happening?? Anyway, I *did* finish the book. It wasn't too graphic, just made me a little uncomfy at times. With that being said, there were about 3 times the author could have ended this book but it just kept going. When it finally did end, it felt lack luster. I know people love this book and maybe some won't agree with me...but it was honestly just okay.

Loved how the story was told from various points of view with different narrators. Many twists and had me guessing throughout the book. Can’t wait to read more from this author.

Great narration and story!

The narration of this story was excellent. The narrators are full of emotion and very expressive, making it very easy to listen to. The story itself is engaging with many twists throughout, but still makes sure all the ends are tied in the end.
