Summary

Twenty-two-year-old aspiring writer Edith 'Eddie' Miller and her best friend, Rose, have always done everything together—climbing trees, throwing grapes at boys, sneaking bottles of wine, practicing kissing....

But following their debutante ball Rose is suddenly talking about marriage, and Eddie is horrified.

When Eddie meets charming, renowned poet Nash Nicholson, he invites her to his crumbling Gothic estate in the countryside. The entourage of eccentric artists indulging in pure hedonism is exactly what Eddie needs in order to forget Rose and finish her novel.

But Eddie might discover the world of famous literary icons isn't all poems and pleasure....

Another gem from Lex Croucher

You will like it if you like regency wit, dangerously charismatic poets who could make all your dreams come true, and gal pals who kiss in treehouses (but only for practice, of course).

The audiobook also deserves specific praise. It's wonderfully read by Ellie Kendrick (off of Game of Thrones among others) with excellently-done distinctive voices for all characters.

Enjoyable listen but unsatisfying ending

Listened to this over a long drive to Scotland and it kept me entertained the whole way. Well narrated. I love Lex's witty style of writing and enjoyed the unfolding of the (predictable but fun) plot. I was quite disappointed with the ending though.
*SPOILER ALERT*
I just don't believe that Eddie would not have attempted to fight to prove the novel was hers after everything. I wish there had at least been a bit in the epilogue newspaper clippings at the end suggesting that it was widely believed that Nash's first novel was in fact written by E Miller.

My Last Book of 2023!

It's unusual for me to start with the second in a series, but the storyline of this really appealed.

The Austenesque writing style made this a very quick & easy listen. Exactly what I was looking for.

Superbly narrated by Ellie Kendrick. This was the perfect way to finish my Audible Listening Year.

Brilliantly written and brilliantly performed!

This book was absolutely fantastic! it's one of the best books that I've read in a while. The characters are so interesting and fleshed out and funny, and the story is just totally lovely. The romance is very nicely written and quite sensuous.

The narrator was also totally excellent. Really engaging and clear, and performed it very appropriately. She suited the story very well.

I will be reading everything else Lex Croucher has written I think!

Splendid Romp (yes, I know…)

I enjoyed Reputation. This was better. The characters are a lot of fun and the plot bounces along. The 19th century novel that like its protagonist breaks the rules. The drama is wickedly engaging and the humour sly making the ‘reader’ alternately laugh and cry. Looking forward to the next Lex Croucher.
