Story
It’s 1875, and Alva Webster has perfected her stiff upper lip after three years of being pilloried in the presses of two continents over fleeing her abusive husband. Now his sudden death allows her to return to New York to make a fresh start, restoring Liefdehuis, a dilapidated Hyde Park mansion, and hopefully her reputation at the same time. However, fresh starts aren’t as easy as they seem, as Alva discovers when stories of a haunting at Liefdehuis begin to reach her.
Summary
In post-World War I England, a young woman inherits a mysterious library and must untangle its powerful secrets…
With the stroke of a pen, twenty-three-year-old Ivy Radcliffe becomes Lady Hayworth, owner of a sprawling estate on the Yorkshire moors. Ivy has never heard of Blackwood Abbey, or of the ancient bloodline from which she’s descended. With nothing to keep her in London since losing her brother in the Great War, she warily makes her way to her new home.
The abbey is foreboding, the servants reserved and suspicious. But there is a treasure waiting behind locked doors: a magnificent library. Despite cryptic warnings from the staff, Ivy feels irresistibly drawn to its dusty shelves, where familiar works mingle with strange, esoteric texts. And she senses something else in the library too, a presence that seems to have a will of its own.
Rumors swirl in the village about the abbey’s previous owners, about ghosts and curses, and an enigmatic manuscript at the center of it all. And as events grow more sinister, it will be up to Ivy to uncover the library’s mysteries in order to reclaim her own story—before it vanishes forever.
Lush, atmospheric and transporting, The Last Heir to Blackwood Library is a skillful reflection on memory and female agency, and a love letter to books from a writer at the height of her power.

Creepy and atmospheric.
I love atmospheric, slow burn, gothic vibes historical fiction. So knew I needed to check this out for sure! It totally deserves a 5 star rating! I was hooked.
I was totally captivated by The witch of Willow Hall by this author and so was keen to read this when it released recently. I decided on the audiobook version as I feel it definitely adds something extra to a story like this. Though I will also need to add this to my bookshelves.
Eerie, atmospheric and captivating throughout, this book tells the story of Ivy who inherits a distant unknown relatives Hall and title. Set in post war England, Ivy moves to Yorkshire to Blackwood Hall with its foreboding library and dark secrets. Only to find that her ancestors are linked to an ancient curse. (Full synopsis in comments)
What to expect-
An introduction that hinted at something dark and hidden, unfolding over each atmospheric chapter
Stories of hauntings by a mad murdering monk in Blackwood Hall
A book that built up in the first half to a dramatic dark climax.
Slow burn chapter by chapter reveals and character driven plot
Hints of romance
Strong independent women and characters you'll hate!
I loved the audiobook adaptation of this book, and this will definitely be a book I reread and recommend.

The fundamentals of the story lured me in - but...
I just found this a huge disappointment. Very little happens until about Chapter 17 and even that is fleeting. The protagonist is weak and annoying. I really wanted to love this book and pre-ordered it - and just feel robbed of £25 now. I can't even recommend this to my book club sadly. It held such promise but just seemed very wishy washy for pretty much most of the book, so much that I was skipping most of it. :(
