Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Narrated by Emilia Fox.

It started with a kiss

And ended in murder....

The darkly addictive new novel from the Sunday Times best-selling author of I Looked Away, Blood Sisters and My Husband's Wife.

In Poppy Page's mind, there are two types of women in this world: those who are faithful to their husbands and those who are not. Until now, Poppy has never questioned which she was.

But when handsome, charming Matthew Gordon walks back into her life after almost two decades, that changes. Poppy makes a single mistake - and that mistake will be far more dangerous than she could imagine.

Someone is going to pay for it with their life....

OMG - Depressing story even Emilia couldn't save

I love Emilia Fox's narration but even she could not save this very depressing story of cartoonish misogynistic men and hopeless women who are bullied by them. I know it may have happened a lot years ago but just too dull and sad to pointlessly rake over unhappy times now.

No idea what happened after I tuned out but fashion models being made to work in factories by dreary husbands who demand their wife goes without meat for a month to pay for her new shoes while he spends his wages in the pub is just too blinking depressing to waste any more time on, Emilia Fox or not - this is going back!

I want adventure, excitement, glamour, murder, mystery, intrigue exotic places, fascinating people, thrills, twists, turns and an addictive tightly plotted story which grips you, entertains and delights you - this book is too full of French letters, Dutch Caps, Factory production lines and wearing baggy clothes from the market to save money - then we hear of someone who had to have her tooth taken out by her family with pliers as could not afford to go to the dentist. .... kill me NOW!

I made a mistake .... getting to chapter 7 - I should have given up so much sooner as real life is more exciting than this.

Finally some different writing style

This is the first novel I’ve listen to from Jane Corry. Used to read thrillers who usually start with the crime committed and frantically searching for the motive and the murderer I was somehow surprised this was not the case in this novel. So, one question came up “where is the crime?”, well, I loved this different writing style! It’s original, refreshing and it makes you far more connected to the characters and their stories. I finished this one and went to start another one from Jane Corry (I Looked Away)

Complex

The story that keeps you in suspense. A sincere search into psychology and feelings, and the complexity of their interplay in our lives.

Wasted an hour on this!

Even Emilia Fox could not save this one. I normally love her narration but this book was just not for me. I gave up after an hour of listening to descriptions of people in the waiting room of a police station and the random dialogue from some woman from Liverpool. I don't know if this book ended up going anywhere but I did not bother to wait and see.

Ok story but pretty irritating at times

The story was quite enjoyable although a little far fetched. But there were several areas that really annoyed me!
Betty for example is only 70, and yet she is described as an elderly old fashioned woman. My mum is 73 and would be furious at that comparison!
It also seems to be the theme of the story that no matter how anybody treats you, you should stay married and work it out for the kids sake. So old fashioned!
And the main character whining on about how hard it is as a working mum, when she has a mother in law living with her who pretty much does everything for her! Just not relatable!
Also the way she hasn’t spoken to her own mum in years for leaving her dad when she was 18?! Who behaves like that at that age!! Understandable from a child but not an 18 year old. She really is extremely self centred and takes no responsibility that everything that goes wrong for her, is of her own making!
A shame really as these areas really spoiled it for me and I couldn’t wait to finish it

Painful

Story could have been told in half the time and so predictable and lazy... sounds harsh but the bit at the conference at end....

Too slow for a "who done it"

The story was slow and mostly uninteresting. You could skip 100 pages in the middle and not loose one bit of plot.

Dullsville

I just could not follow the story at all. It made no sense. What I did understand I could not have cared less about. Unlikable characters. A definite return I didn’t even make it through 10 chapters. you know it’s a bad book when you have to keep rewinding it to understand what the heck was going on because I zoned out on how boring it was. Definite pass
