Summary

Have you heard of The Rules of Engagement? It's a book that promises to teach you to find the man of your dreams in 10 easy steps. Unsurprisingly, I don't own a copy. What is it, 1892?

But I'm a journalist, and I've promised to follow it to the letter and write about the results. Never mind that my friends think I'm insane, I'm stalking men all over town, and I can't keep my mouth shut at the best of times.

My name is Cat Buchanan. I'm 36 years old and live with my daughter in Glasgow. I've been single for six years, but that's about to change. After all, I'm on a deadline. I Followed the Rules, and this is what happened.

Brilliant book!

I absolutely loved this. It's not for everyone as it is a very modern story but I think it is brilliant. I had a smile on my face all the way through the second half. It is original, witty with a feel good factor. Just what I love. The narration starts off quite pacey but you soon get into it and it is excellently read.

Brilliant - funny - feel good!

If you could sum up I Followed the Rules in three words, what would they be?

Funny, feel-good, captivating

Who was your favorite character and why?

I love the main character - she has the perfect blend of honest humour.

Have you listened to any of Susie Riddell’s other performances? How does this one compare?

This is the first and I would definitely listen again

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It constantly made me laugh - the first ever adudio book to succeed in doing so. The main character's honest sarcasm is hilarious.

I follow the rules

I don't know why I bought this book and audio. The badlanguage is appalling! Didn't finish it, not for me.

The best book I've ever heard (or read for that matter!)

I love this author! She is absolutely hilarious. The reader of the story could not be more perfect for the character. The changes in accents and voices were not at all cringeworthy (let's admit! Sometimes it can be!).
I loved every single second of the story. I'll be getting her other book and keeping an eye out for more from this author! Loved it!!

Humerous story, easy listening

I've enjoyed this light hearted and unchallenging listen, listened to it from start to finish this afternoon while off work feeling poorly. Just the thing to cheer me up - made me laugh out loud in places. Loved the Scottish accent of the narrator, and thought she did an excellent job with all the different voices and accents. Easy on the ear, and well paced.

*Dating by Numbers*

Cat is a busy journalist who writes for a magazine under the pseudonym of ‘Glasgow Girl’. She has a wonderful young daughter whose father was the love of her life is getting married to someone else.

One of her colleagues hands her a book ‘The rules of Engagement’ she is cynical about the author’s statement that you can find your dream date in 10 steps her disapproval leads her to trash the book online.

Painfully aware that she needs a good story to please her editor who feels her work needs more punch. So after her critique the author gets in touch with her editor and requests a lunch meeting with Cat. Unbeknownst to her he also uses a pseudonym, then Cat finds herself doing an experiment following the rules, lol

A fun and easy read, just what I needed with interesting results

So much dislike

The world is full of people who don’t tolerate others’ personal philosophy. Of course fanatical radical views of any perspective and core are alarming and grab at a panic need for a protective, distancing shell. Or those vindictive, vicious individuals whose venim poisons any culture. But where is the live and let live in us. Why are people so full of dislike for anything ‘other’.
Do you think its because we live in a culture that robs us of the acceptance of listening and considering open discussion of values?
I found this story worrying.
Everyone has different views - we should be open to this and be free to change our own if the balance of pros and cons demands it.
Don’t lets ‘hate’ people.
Lets accept they have their ideas for a reason. Lets be able to and encouraged ‘talking things over’.
Oh dear, sorry, didn’t mean to go on so. A bit overcooked here.
Only got to chapter four - but felt so discouraged and uncomfortable that I gave up. I guess what with Trumpism and the cynisism of popularism in a time of plague its all too much for me.
Apologies to the author.
I’ll give the book another go, if we are ever back to normal.

Predictable

The narration was wonderful and the writing was quite good as well but I found the story extremely predictable.
