Summary

Chicago, 1932. Mick Oberon may look like just another private detective, but beneath the fedora and the overcoat, he's got pointy ears and he's packing a wand.

Oberon's used to solving supernatural crimes, but the latest one's extra weird. A mobster's daughter was kidnapped sixteen years ago, replaced with a changeling, and Mick's been hired to find the real child. The trail's gone cold, but what there is leads Sideways, to the world of the Fae, where the Seelie Court rules. And Mick's not really welcome in the Seelie Court any more. He'll have to wade through Fae politics and mob power struggles to find the kidnapper – and of course it's the last person he expected.

Performed by Eric Messner, Ren Kasey, Terence Aselford, David Coyne, Nora Achrati, David Jourdan, Kimberly Gilbert, Lily Beacon, Bob Payne, Andy Brownstein, Bradley Smith, Colleen Delany, Michael John Casey, Andy Clemence, Richard Cutting, Christopher Graybill, Nick DePinto, Matthew Keenan, Nanette Savard, Elliot Dash, Tim Carlin, Scott McCormick, Jeff Allin, Steve Wannall, Dylan Lynch, Casie Platt, Tara Giordano, Mort Shelby.

Ruined!

I just couldn't take it any more!! Why! The storyline was interesting. The narration was good but the background music was awful. Constantly waiting for the background music to fade out but could not take it any more. Only got to about chapter 4 and gave up. Such a shame.

Good but ruined

Despite the obvious effort that's gone into this production it's a shame that's it's been utterly ruined by the soundtrack. It's obtrusive, overly loud and overused to the point, where by chapter 3, I couldn't stand to listen anymore despite wanting to continue with the story. Although I rated the performance 2, that's really for the music - the voice acting background effects are a 4.

Thanks but

Author definitely has talent and a knack for characters. Was looking for a gumshoe tale, which this satisfies, but the magic fairy angle just didn’t float my boat. And the fight scenes in the early chapters are entertaining but a little pointless.

Good and energetic teen fiction. You will be entertained.

OK story - Ruined by poor audio mixing

This was in the plus catalog so didn’t cost extra. If it is still there you can try it for yourself without investing a credit.

The story is ok. Performances ok as well - when you could hear them. Music is used throughout to set the ‘background’. Jazzy stuff for prohibition Chicago, lyrical for the Sidhe lands etc. but way, way too loud. Drowning out the voices in places and too distracting in others.

This wasn’t my first Graphic Audio production, but if it had been I probably wouldn’t be spending credits on others.

As a uk listener, I struggled with Prohibition Era slang which is used extensively throughout.

I finished it, but I doubt I will get book 2 - purely because of the poor sound mixing.

Fun and exciting

A great blend of adult content mixed with magic,
Not your whimsy spell casting but more towards the old ways of magic.
The combination of witty writing and good ADR casting is a must for any listener.
Music and foley was well reordered and really gave it the edged that made this stand out.

Immersive and engaging

The performance is great, dynamic and immersive. Having a noir setting, a narrating private investigator seems natural. The story is ok, having a fresh and original approach of different styles.

Enjoyable Story.

Fun story about a fey private eye in 1920s Chicago. I really enjoyed this, the acting was great the only slight niggle was the constant background music which I thought was too loud. However, I'm sure others enjoyed it so that's probably just me. Enjoyable.

Enjoyable and original story

The music in the first part of the audiobook is annoying and the sound affects come before the narrator reads the action, but otherwise it is an enjoyable story and I honestly didn’t see the end coming.

Will be checking out the next one as soon as I get my next credit.

Too much background noise

Distracting music constantly playing, not sure how it’s supposed to add to the story, it gave me a headache so I bailed at chapter 2. Shame, as the story was really promising.
