Summary

The Meanest Streets....

James Kincaid is the type of guy who might be described as down on his luck, if only he’d had some luck to begin with. Like so many people in the shadows of Seattle, he’s trying to get by with what he has. In his case, that includes a lively spirit, a sadly diminished magical talent, quick wits, and good knowledge of the twists and turns of Seattle’s dingy streets and back alleys. He puts all that to the service of whatever clients he can dig up, solving whatever cases they’re willing to pay him to take on. With any luck, he’ll scrape up enough nuyen to buy a few rounds of his favorite drink - whiskey, neat.

His latest case seems simple enough - find a girl who’s gone missing. But throw in a couple of feuding megacorporations, a few organized crime families, and a full selection of the odd denizens of Seattle’s streets, and you’ve got a case that’s anything but easy. It’s up to Kincaid to see how many people he can keep alive - including (and especially) himself.

Neat is a Shadowrun novella plunging listeners into the cold, sharp environs of the Sixth World. Elves, trolls, orks, and dwarves mix with humans in the shadowy streets of a near-future world altered by magic, trying to survive on the crumbs dropped by the megacorporations that dominate the world. Whether you’re new to Shadowrun fiction or a longtime fan, Neat is your ticket back to the Sixth World in all its dark, desperate glory.

Nice story, good performance. the only issue was somme very Bad edit that made the narrator uncomprehensible for cyber voiced character.

Definitely worth your time!

Robert Austin James is, by far, one of the best narrators and performers that I've listened to on Audible. He nails the character of the hard-boiled detective so well; it's impossible to imagine anyone doing a better job here. He also works hard to bring the rest of the story to life, with each supporting character having a unique voice and accent.

I ended up listening to the whole series of books just to hear more of him. I also ended up listening at 85% speed, just so I could enjoy each word that little bit longer.

I had no problems with the sound here. Some of the non-human characters do have voice effects. I listened mostly with headphones, and it was never a problem. So I'm not sure what other reviewers were struggling with. Maybe it depends on the quality of your speakers?

As for the story… Shadowrun is, in my opinion, one of the best cyberpunk settings of all time, and this is considered one of the best short stories from it, so I've got to give it five stars.

Russell Zimmerman is a good writer. There were definitely times throughout the series when I've really appreciated the way he turned a phrase.

The character of Ariana seems like a bit of an anime-waifu insert for the author. Some people might appreciate that more than others. It didn't really affect my enjoyment of the story either way.

I'm genuinely sad that I've finished the series now because I could just keep listening to this forever. I highly recommend giving this a try. It's only short, but if you like it, there are four more books, which are longer.

If you are interested, the correct order to listen is: Neat, Shaken, Stirred, Chaser, then On the Rocks last. I accidentally listened to On the Rocks 2nd because it was suggested next, and it spoiled some stuff from the other stories, so don't do that!
