How do you get rid of unwanted guests? What do you do if there's a racket in the quiet carriage? How should you eat peas, and behave in queues? How to behave, like how to punctuate, is an aspect of life that many are no longer taught. Thankfully, Sandi Toksvig has come to the rescue with her entertaining guide to modern manners, with characteristic wit and perceptiveness.

Story
'Between the Stops is a sort of a memoir, my sort. It's about a bus trip really, because it's my view from the Number 12 bus (mostly top deck, the seat at the front on the right), a double-decker that plies its way from Dulwich, in South East London, where I was living, to where I sometimes work - at the BBC, in the heart of the capital. It's not a sensible way to write a memoir at all, probably, but it's the way things pop into your head as you travel, so it's my way'.

London, 1897. A young girl, Valentine Grey, arrives in England. She's been brought up in the remote and sunny climes of India and finds being forced into corsets and skirts in damp and cold country insufferable. The only bright spot: her exciting cousin, Reggie. Reggie and his lover, Frank, seek out the adventure the clandestine bars and streets of London offer and are happy to include Valentine in their secret. And then comes the Boer War, and Reggie's father volunteers him; the empire must be defended. But it won't be Reggie who dons the volunteer regiment's garb.

The inhabitants of the Inventor's Housing Estate keep themselves to themselves. There are the friendly 'Hellos' when commutes coincide and the odd cheeky eye roll when the wine bottles clank in number seven's wheelie bin, but it's not exactly Ramsay Street. The dilapidated community centre is no longer the beating heart of the estate that Becky remembers from her childhood. So the new pottery class she's helped set up feels like a fresh start. And not just for her.

Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
It's April 1940 and German troops are pouring onto the streets of Denmark. 12-year-old Bamse is ordered by his father to keep his head down and stay out of trouble. But Bamse and his daring friend Anton can't resist playing the occasional practical joke on the invading soldiers. When it becomes clear that the trouble isn't just going to pass them by, the people of Denmark decide to take action and Bamse and his eccentric family are about to take part in one of history's most dramatic rescues - smuggling Denmark's Jewish population, across the water to Sweden and safety.
Many of the characters are based on Sandi's own family, including her father, Bamse, and the book was inspired by the stories her told to her.

Wonderful
What a wonderful book, so beautifully written and superbly narrated by the author herself. Maybe this story was aimed at the children’s market but as a nearly 70 year old grandmother I loved it. It was recommended to me by my daughter who had listened to it with her children and husband as a family.

Beautiful story - based on family life
There is so much more that happened in the war that we don’t know about. This is a wonderful insight to how life was in Denmark. To hear it from the perspective of a young boy made it possible to touch on subjects in a warm innocent way which allows your imagination to take you completely into his world. Loved it!

An incredible tale of a nation’s bravery
I’m a little ashamed to say I knew nothing of Denmark’s World War Two history, but this fascinating and deeply moving story of how Sandi’s family took part in the resistance taught me so much, the Danish people were remarkably brave in the way they mobilised to save as much of their Jewish population as humanly possible from transportation to the Concentration camps in Germany.
Sandi reads her story beautifully and I loved every minute of it, even when I was sobbing my heart out.

fabulous story with lessons we all should remember
I picked this after my daughter read it at school, it is a wonderful tale based on true life events but fictionalised. The characters are easy to imagine and so full of life, and despite the obvious sad nature of much of the war time, it is an uplifting story of those who did the right thing. I love that it is narrated by the author, gives it authenticity. Very enjoyable. Mostly happy ending.

As someone who is currently living in Denmark the story came alive for me because of my knowledge of places mentioned in the book.

It’s a story suitable for children too.
