About this listen
Susan Calman is a well-known comedian and writer who has appeared on countless radio and television programmes. Her solo stand up show, Susan Calman Is Convicted, was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and dealt with subjects like the death penalty, appearance and depression.
The reaction to the show she wrote about mental health was so positive that she wanted to expand on the show and write a more detailed account of surviving when you're the world's most negative person.
The Crab of Hate is the personification of Calman's depression and her version of the notorious Black Dog. A constant companion in her life, the Crab has provided her with the best and very worst of times.
This is a very personal memoir of how, after many years and with a lot of help and talking, she has embraced her dark side and realised that she can be the most joyous sad person you'll ever meet.
Cheer Up Love is funny, poignant and (hopefully) informative. It's always good to talk.

Funny, Refreshing and Honest
I bought this audiobook during the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020. It seemed appropriate both to reflect on what's going on in the world, and in my own head at this time. It's so refreshing to hear honest talk about depression, and Susan Calman's narration is perfect. A must listen!

Refreshingly honest without any jargon. Thanks Susan for saying it how I feel and indeed have felt for years. I thought it was just me!! And yes, I have started talking about it! :-)

Fantastic!
I absolutely loved this book. Whether you are or have been depressed in the past or you know someone who has been going through a difficult time, there is something in here (I think) virtually anyone can relate to. Funny, touching and uncomfortable at times, this is an honest, brave and much needed narrative of what life with depression looks and feels like. I have found this little gem much more helpful and way less daunting than many of the so called self help books out there. Thank you, Susan Calman.

My first written review
This is my first written review and I had to do it for this book in particular.
Susan Calman has managed to produce a breathtaking piece of work that brings light, happiness, love and laughter to the serious subject of depression and its relating topics.
I personally throughly enjoyed listening to this and it's a book I know I'll continue to come back to in the future.
I was, at first a little sceptical. On a whole I can find other people discussing depression a bit of a difficult thing to deal with and I was worried I wouldn't relate. I was wrong.
I hadn't heard much of Susan Calman prior to listening to this, so purchased on a bit of a whim but it's a decision I certainly don't regret. It may not be to everyone's taste and some people may not find it as heart warming as I did, but for me personally, I loved every second.
Cheer up love isn't just 'another book about depression'. It's one that covers most facts of life; love, friendship, pain, change and the ever glowing hope that the future will be better. I really loved this and couldn't recommend it more!

Perfect listen for dark moments!
A wonderfully intelligent, warm, funny and sensitive account of Susan's life so far living with the crab of hate. I say sensitive as it was not self indulgent or overly descriptive. Every word counted and was spoken with possibly the most beautiful Scottish accent ever, I looked forward to listening and will listen whenever I feel like stepping off the planet for a while and making my smile come back! Thanks Susan you really are awesome!

Exceptional insights and funny with it.
I loved the honesty, wisdom and truths in this book. Susan delivers her own work perfectly. And she's right about the first 10 minutes of Up.
