Summary

If you want to discover the captivating history of Mexico, then pay attention....

Before the modern country was born in 1821, the territory that today comprises 32 states and few small islands was inhabited by ancient dynasties and kingdoms of warriors, astronomers, priests, temples for human sacrifice, and, surprisingly, some of the largest cities in the world. It is estimated that the sacred city of Chichen Itza, in the Yucatan Peninsula, was larger than Paris at its height of splendor.

This fascinating journey through Mexico’s history, from its amazing pre-Hispanic past to the end of the 20th century, will reveal more surprises than the listener can imagine. In the words of the self-proclaimed Mexican singer Chavela Vargas, “Mexico has magic. I looked for that magic, and I found it there.”

In History of Mexico: A Captivating Guide to Mexican History, Starting from the Rise of Tenochtitlan through Maximilian's Empire to the Mexican Revolution and the Zapatista Indigenous Uprising, you will discover topics such as:

  • The era of empires
  • The Spanish-Aztec war and new Spain
  • The birth of a nation
  • “From the Halls of Montezuma....”
  • The big division
  • “The most beautiful empire in the world”
  • In the times of Don Porfirio

Liked It

The book contains writing by many voices over several centuries. By the time I finished it I felt I had a much better understanding of Mexican history.

Interesting

This is interesting reading from Cortes' first-hand view and account before the fall of the Aztec Empire, to Aztec blood and worship practices, to land reform writings and the whole history of Mexico laid out in its important documents, letters and accounts according to the authors.

Narration

My new passion is learning the history of my ancestors. Being bilingual, I was taken back by the narrator's inability to properly pronounce cities in 'spanish' making it hard to follow locations accurately.

Mexico history ends in the 1990s / Pronunciations

1) Most Mexican histories that I have found so far were written in the 1990s and miss political developments since then.

2) It would be a novelty for a book about Mexico (not just this one) read by an English speaker not to butcher people and places pronunciations. Accents in names are ignored. Spanish vowels pronunciations are off. And some places are pronounced based of incorrect spellings. e.g. Ciudad Juarez read as Cuidad Juarez or Qweedad Waarez.

love history

I very much enjoyed the history and remember much of it due to the stories from my parents grandparents and family. I am a first generation American of mexican descent.
I did not at all care for the narrator who's pronunciation of the spanish names and names of towns and events was extremely poor.
You need to find people who can pronounce the language correctly. Language and it correct pronunciation is also part of the history of all countries.

Learned some new facts about Mexico’s history

Good book. I saw it as a very good summary of the history of Mexico. There’s too much of history in this great nation and people to share in just one book. This book has now provoked an interest in me of researching specific eras in the history of Mexico

Comprehensive

If you require to learn how Mexico became what it is today and how Mexican society grew to be what it is you should learn this book. It is not crucial in any way, just all the facts, good, bad, humor, and sorrow. This is the first history audiobook I've to listen to it that like a story from start to finish.

This is a very in depth audiobook

I have learned dozens of books on the history of México, but none provided me the feel of real knowledge of why results transpired as they did in México's bloody and complicated past as thoroughly as Fire and Stock.
